The Runaways

Interview with director Floria Sigismondi (The Runaways)

Super music video director and native Canadian, Floria Sigismondi, hit the jackpot when Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning were cast in her feature directorial debut, The Runaways—the '70s biopic about how famous rockers Joan Jett and Cherie Currie started the first all-girl rock band.

Starring Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett (Stewart also sports Jett’s famous rock hair) and Dakota Fanning as fellow founding member Cherie Currie, The Runaways is a rock 'n' roll movie that’s based on the story of how a group of girls from ages 15 to 17 shot to superstardom with the help of famous producer Kim Fowley (played brilliantly by Michael Shannon). This was the perfect story for Sigismondi to dive into given her background directing music videos for artists such as The Cure, Marilyn Manson and more.

Tribute’s Toni-Marie Ippolito sat down with Sigismondi to talk about what it was like filming with Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, her reaction to seeing the stars in costume and how she helped Stewart and Fanning get into rock 'n’ roll mode—'70s style.
