Single mother Gemma (Penélope Cruz) and her son Pietro (Emile Hirsch) leave their apartment in Rome to visit Sarajevo, where an exhibit commemorating the siege will display photographs of Pietro's father.

Sixteen years ago, Gemma and Pietro escaped the city, while the boy's father stayed behind and was killed. While Gemma uses this trip to repair her broken relationship with her son, it also forces her to confront her past—facing loss, the cost of war, and the power of love.
