ith a stellar voice and great songwriting skills, Jakalope lead singer Katie B. kicks butt amidst a project/band filled with a whopping 36 collaborators, including Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor. While in Toronto, Katie B. talked to Teen Tribute about her career, touring, what it's like to be in the spotlight and how to break into the music biz.

When did you decide you wanted to do this?
Ever since I was a little kid. My mom put me in singing lessons but I hated it and I would cry! But my mom encouraged me to sing in front of people and I started to love it.

How did you initially get involved with the group?
I was working in a recording studio called The Warehouse and I met music producer Dave Ogilvie there. One day he asked me if I wanted to sing on a few things and I said yes -- not knowing that all this was going to come out of it.

What was it like making the Jakalope CD It Dreams? It was really laid back. It took about eight months to finish. There wasn't really a lot of pressure put on me. I was just really excited to be actually recording. It was really fun.

Being the only girl, what's it like touring with a bunch of guys?
It's not too bad. I get my own room and I get lots of special attention! There is another female back-up singer who's also there. It's nice to have another girl to talk to.

What was your first show like? It was in Montreal and it was awesome. It was amazing to see people in the front row singing along. It was instant gratification.

Do you write the lyrics?
I wrote about 90 per cent of the lyrics on It Dreams. I mostly write about day-to-day things or anything that I'm going through.

How has this affected your social life?
I don't get to see my friends as much but I'm meeting new people. But my friends and family are very supportive. My parents have been to every show!

Do you feel successful?
Of course! Getting to do a video and being nominated for some awards is amazing. I also got to go to Japan, which under any other circumstances I would not have been able to do.

Are you a movie fan? What have you seen recently?
Yes. Lords of Dogtown was great! I kind of like watching scary movies, too. I still want to see The 40-Year-Old Virgin. I love movies like that, like all the Will Ferrell movies and Dodgeball and Zoolander.

What advice would you give to others who want to be in a band?
It's like that Woody Allen quote: "Eighty per cent of success is just showing up". I went to music school. I knew what I wanted and I went for it. You got to be there to get it. It's not easy but it's there for the taking.
