Superman Returns

Following a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel comes back to Earth in a new chapter in the saga of one of the world's most beloved superheroes. While Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) plots to render him powerless once and for
all, Superman (Brandon Routh) faces the heartbreaking realization that the woman he loves, Lois Lane (Bosworth), has moved on with her life. Or has she? Superman's bittersweet return challenges him to bridge the distance between them while finding a place in a society that has learned to survive without him. In an attempt to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction, Superman embarks on an epic journey of redemption that takes him from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space.

What was your reaction when you got this role?
I was going to Brazil for Christmas and New Year and I was literally in the car on the way to the airport and I got a call and it was my manager. She said, "Kate?" I just knew by the tone of her voice. I just knew and I just gasped. She said, "You're going to be Lois Lane." I just screamed I just thought, "Oh my God, I'm going to be Lois Lane." It was all of these different ranges of emotion flying through me in a matter of seconds. It was definitely one moment that I'll never forget.

What's been the most fun aspect for you playing Lois Lane?
The most fun? There are so many fun things about it. It's interesting because we've shot pretty much chronologically so we started out in The Daily Planet. That was fun because it was very rapid-fire dialogue and feisty and in the office and that's her thing, that's where she gets her drive and that was a lot of fun. So you're just in there and it's intense. And then we shifted to the sort of more romantic Superman/Lois Lane bits doing the flying and that was incredible And now we've moved into the Lex Luthor stuff, which is just a ball, and so it's been interesting to see the different phases that it's moved from and to see how it's shifted and changed, but it's continually fun for me.

So why does she think the world doesn't need Superman?
Well, he picked up and left for five years without saying goodbye, which I think would leave a pretty harsh sting on someone's heart. So I think that she was very angry and searching for answers and so she put the question out there, "why does the world need Superman?" I think, that in her mind, the reason the world doesn't need a Superman is that all of a sudden someone comes down and is this savior to the world and everyone gets used to that, to being saved and then he picks up and leaves and they're left with taking care of themselves which is something that people should learn to do anyway. They should be able to save themselves.

When did you first see Brandon as Superman?
The first time I saw Brandon in the Superman suit was the first picture we had taken of him in the suit. It was outside at Fox studios on the lawn area. And I remember that it was a very big deal. You would imagine it to be this sting operation or something because no photos had been released yet of him in the suit and obviously they didn't want someone taking a picture of him and sending it out to press and having it be sort of ruined. He had the suit on, but he had this black cape over it and he was sort of walking around and it was like the unveiling of the Mona Lisa or something.

Did you grow up reading comic books or do you read them now?
I didn't really when I was younger. I have now a bit more and I think that the funniest thing to me, especially reading the Superman ones, was how large the chests are of the women. I looked at Bryan (director Bryan Singer) and I said, "I can see why you chose me. It's so obvious."

What you've read now, was that to get familiar with all of it?
Yeah. The great thing I think about the film that Bryan is making is that, yes, it's obviously based on a comic book but what he was so adamant on and telling me when I first met with him was, "We're making this film, but what's most important is that it has a heart, a depth and a soul and is multi-dimensional." So that's what has been really incredible for me. I'm playing Lois Lane, but to me she's a real person. She's someone who has a child and has tortured feelings going on inside of her and that, I think, is what's most important for Bryan. You'll see the flashiness in the film and you'll see the great explosions and Lex Luthor's big plan and all of that, but it's really the heart and soul of the movie that I think is going to bring it to another level.

Do you ever go online to see what people are saying about you in regard to this movie?
No. Definitely not. I mean, no offense, but as an actor I feel incredibly vulnerable when I think about going on the net because it's just bizarre because you know yourself and you know that you're a human being and then when you're sort of put up there on the Internet and people talk about you and they don't know you, it's a strange thing.
