atalie Portman and Dustin Hoffman are just two of the big stars in town this month. The two are here until June for Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, in which Hoffman plays a 243-year-old eccentric who wills his magic toy store to his insecure manager, Molly (Portman). Hoffman has been spotted around the city and Portman was seen enjoying a recent Coldplay concert.
John Travolta in drag? That's right. The leading man has signed on for the big budget film version of the musical Hairspray filming here next month. The musical, based on John Waters' 1988 film, tells the story of overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad and her search for love and stardom on a '60s dance show in Baltimore. Travolta will slip on the heels of Tracy's hefty mom, Edna, while Queen Latifah revs up for the role of Motormouth Maybelle. No stranger to the city, Latifah told Tribute she was thrilled the film is bringing her back to Toronto.
"We're gonna get that town a rockin'!," she said. "Toronto is one of my favorite cities. I spent six months there shooting Chicago and I have some good friends there. I think it's a great city with great people, culture and music. I always look forward to spending time there."

everal high-profile stars were in "Halliwood" earlier this year for various projects. Among the most noteworthy was British actress Kate Beckinsale (Underworld: Evolution). She joined forces with actor Sam Rockwell (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) in the independent film, Snow Angels. In the movie, Beckinsale plays a small-town waitress who suffers through a rocky relationship with her estranged husband (Rockwell). Filming took place throughout February and March and although stargazers were out in full force, both stars maintained low profiles with hardly a glimpse of either being reported.
Also during the same period, Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange filmed a made-for-television movie in the city. Lange plays Dr. Cornelia Wilbur in the remake of the 1976 movie, Sybil, for CBS. Nova Scotia's own legendary film director, the late Daniel Petrie, directed the original starring Joanne Woodward and Sally Field.
