Tomás (John Bell), a frail, shy eight-year-old, has been living a solitary life in a drab orphanagesad, friendless and alone. Then a joyous burst of colour comes into his world: Maire O'Donnell (Connie Nielsen), whose smile and spirit light up the darkest roomand Tomás's heart. Before he knows it, Tomas is on a boat, sailing to wind-swept Corrie Island off the coast of Ireland, where he meets Alec, her reticent husband who cannot hide his disappointment with the boy.
The film is overly sweet and emotionally manipulative, but still had many things to enjoy. Solid performances by all, including the breathtakingly beautiful Irish countryside and coastline. Aidan Quinn is all grown up and never looked better.
Sad, but very uplifting... I left the theatre in tears, but with a spring in my step!
well acted and a great story. We enjoyed this film very much
