American writer Tom Ricks (Ethan Hawke) comes to Paris, desperate to win back the love of his estranged wife and daughter.
When things don't go according to plan, Tom ends up living in a shady hotel and working as a night guard to make ends meet. Then a beautiful, mysterious stranger (Kristin Scott Thomas) walks into his life. Things start looking up.
But their passionate relationship triggers a series of inexplicable events—as if an obscure power were taking control of his life.
