Jurassic World unleashes new dinosaur

JurassicWorldTwenty-two years since Jurassic Park and the dinosaurs haven’t died out.

But since it’s 2015, they’re not just dinosaurs anymore.

The upcoming 3D action-adventure film Jurassic World will feature a new attraction; a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur called Indominus Rex, from the Latin word meaning “Fierce” or “Untameable King,” who is approximately 40 feet.

According to its description (via jurassicworld.com), “Indominus’ roar is estimated to reach 140-160db—the same as a 747 taking off and landing. And it can reach speeds of 30 mph…while confined to its enclosure.” Indominus may also resemble a T-Rex, “But its distinctive head ornamentation and ultra-tough bony osteoderms can be traced from Theropods known as Abeliosaurs. Indominus’’ horns have been placed above the eye orbit through genetic material hybridized from Carnotaurus, Majungasaurus, Rugops and Giganotosaurus.”

The geneticists at Hammond Creation Lab took their job very seriously when creating this thing.

The carnivorous Indominus Rex also ranks “Very High” on the Aggression Index and is “bigger” and “louder” with “more teeth.” Fun fact: its teeth are constantly being replaced. All the better to eat you with, my dears.

For those of you worried this new genetically modified dinosaur may be going too far out of the box, director Colin Trevorrow says it’s nothing that hasn’t been suggested before.

“I know the idea of a modified dinosaur put a lot of fans on red alert, and I understand it. But we aren’t doing anything here that [Michael] Crichton didn’t suggest in his novels,” Trevorrow said. “This animal is not a mutant freak. It doesn’t have a snake’s head or octopus tentacles. It’s a dinosaur, created in the same way the others were, but now the genetics have gone to the next level. For me, it’s a natural evolution of the technology introduced in the first film.”

Patrick Crowley and Frank Marshall are producing with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. The film stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.
