New releases this week – Tomorrowland, Poltergeist and more

TomorrowlandWe know there are already some fantastic films playing in theatres right now but there are about to be a few more added to that list. If you’re looking for something new you can check out George Clooney in the sci-fi film Tomorrowland, or be prepared to be on the edge of your seat in the thriller Poltergeist.

The sci-fi film Tomorrowland stars George Clooney alongside Hugh Laurie and Britt Robertson. It follows the story of Casey Newton (Britt Robertson), a girl who finds a pin that changes the world around her every time she touches it. Upset when it stops working, Casey tracks down Frank Walker (Clooney), the scientist behind the pin and convinces him to bring her to the world that she saw. Their journey to Tomorrowland is filled with much more action and adventure than they could have anticipated and their end location is spectacular. For showtimes click here.

If you’re looking for a film to keep you on the edge of your seat, head out and watch the thriller Poltergeist this weekend. This remake looks freakier than ever when a family moves to a new suburb, unaware that it was built on an old cemetery. Strange things start to occur and when their young daughter is taken from them by the evil spirits haunting their home, the family gets help from a psychic in order to get her back. Opening this weekend in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal is Welcome to Me. This comedy stars Kristen Wiig as Alice, who wins the lottery and decides to spend her earnings on a talk show about herself. Alice suffers from a mental illness and her goal to become famous takes a tole on her relationships with her friends and family. For showtimes click here.

Based on the real-life murder case involving Amanda Knox, The Face of an Angel stars Daniel Brühl and Kate Beckinsale and opens in Toronto this weekend. The media is in a frenzy when American student Jessica Fuller is accused of murdering her English roommate. Thomas Lang (Daniel Brühl) is a film director who is hired to turn the book about the controversial issue into a movie. Banksy Does New York is a documentary opening in Toronto this weekend. The now infamous street artist, known as Banksy, made waves in 2013 when he created a new piece of street art every single day for a month. People from all across New York chased down the artwork after Banksy left clues about its whereabouts on his website. The identity of Banksy is still unknown and this very interesting film looks into the controversy that the incredible street artist has made.

Opening this weekend in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver is Saint Laurent. This film is based on the life of iconic fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent during his glory years in the ’60s and ’70s. Yves faces an enormous amount of stress in order to keep his brand at the top of the fashion industy and he turns to drugs and alcohol in order to cope. The film highlights many of Yves’ struggles throughout his life and gives a glamorous and devastating look into the world of a fashion icon. Find showtimes here.
