New movies in theaters – Things to Come, The Other Half and more

Things to Come movie posterLovers of independent and foreign films will rejoice this weekend, because there are eight unique and diverse flicks hitting theaters. The first is the French drama Things to Come, which stars French icon and recent Gotham Award winner Isabelle Huppert as a woman at a crossroads after her husband leaves her for another woman. 

Homegrown talent includes Orphan Black star and Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany in the Canadian drama The Other Half, while Jacob Tierney leads a Canadian cast in the dramedy LovesickBritish Columbia-raised actress Meg Tilly gets frightful in the horror flick Antibirth, which stars ’90s it-girls Natasha Lyonne and Chloe Sevigny. There’s also the National Film Board of Canada-produced documentary The Apology, which follows three former “comfort women” who were forced into military sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. ~Shelby Morton

Things to Come- The well-structured life of middle-aged philosophy teacher Nathalie (Isabelle Huppert) is thrown into chaos after her husband leaves her for another woman, and she is left to deal with her extremely possessive mother. However, she finds an unlikely new companion who helps her move past her struggles — a former student of hers and radical communist named Fabien (Roman Kolinka). Things to Come hits theaters in Toronto, Calgary, and Regina today, Victoria on Dec. 7, and Vancouver, Waterloo, and Edmonton on Dec. 9. Click here for showtimes.

The Other Half- Five years following the mysterious disappearance of his younger brother, Nickie Bellow (Tom Cullen) is grief stricken and suffering from depression. He barely maintains contact with his parents and has trouble holding onto a job for long because he’s easily enraged. After a confrontation with an angry customer gets him fired from his server position, an attractive young customer named Emily (Tatiana Maslany) comes to his defense. He feels an immediate connection and attraction to her, which is reciprocated. However, when Emily stops taking her medication for bipolar disorder and begins acting in a bizarre manner, Nickie feels helpless. Lovesick- Dash (Jacob Tierney ) is a 33-year-old artist who makes a meagre living painting murals. Depressed, he’s in denial — he thinks he still has a chance with his ex-girlfriend, Lauren (Jessica Paré), who’s engaged to Dash’s nemesis, Mark Adam Jones (Jay Baruchel). When Dash meets spontaneous Nora (Ali Tataryn), things could change for him. She’s not perfect — she’s an alcoholic who attends AA meetings, but in comparison to Dash, she has it together and would be great for Dash. Unfortunately, Dash’s focus is firmly on the past. Dash realizes he has a problem and starts seeing psychotherapist Dr. Goldberg (Ross McMillan). Trapped in a cycle of unrequited love, Dash has to do something to turn his life around. Sky on Fire- When a group of thieves steal a groundbreaking life-prolonging medicine from a top-secret medical facility, a chief security officer at the facility (Daniel Wu) must figure out a way to safely return the cure into the right hands before an all-out war erupts. Antibirth- When Lou (Natasha Lyonne), a young alcoholic who’s also into pill popping and smoking her bong, wakes up after a night of partying with hazy memories of what happened the night before, she finds to her surprise and dismay that she’s pregnant. Her equally hard-partying best friend Sadie (Chloe Sevigny) tells Lou she might want to slow it down with the drugs and booze now that she’s expecting, but Lou doesn’t listen. When she spots a strange growth on her neck and experiences hallucinations, she begins to wonder what is growing inside her. As her due date rapidly approaches, the people around her begin to fear what’s happening to Lou. Antibirth releases in Toronto only today. Click here for showtimes.

Kahaani 2- Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) lives happily with her daughter Mini in the sleepy town of Chandannagore. A loving mother, Vidya lives for her child and dotes on her day and night. However, one day Mini goes missing. While trying to locate her, Vidya is involved in a freak car accident that leaves her comatose. Inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal) is tasked with investigating the hit and run that put Vidya in a coma, and unknowingly uncovers a dangerous criminal past that may implicate Vidya in the kidnapping of her daughter. The Apology- This moving documentary follows three “comfort women” who were just a few of the 200,000 girls and young women kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Japanese Army during the second World War. Grandma Cao in China, Grandma Gil in South Korea, and Grandma Adela in the Philippines, over 70 years after their imprisonment and despite their fading health, give a first-hand account of the horrifying truths behind their past in order to ensure that history is no longer lost.
