It was a race to the finish for Jack Reacher and Madea on this pre-pre-Halloween weekend, and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back won over Canadian audiences to take home first place in the Great White North. But in a surprise turn of events, the action sequel, rated 4.2 stars at Tribute.ca, came in second in North America with $23 million. The flick, which brings back blockbuster king Tom Cruise as a rogue former U.S. major, is a follow up to 2012’s $218 million-earning Jack Reacher.
BOO! A Madea Halloween, the latest installment of the Tyler Perry franchise, played on just under 20 screens in Canada and did not make the top 10. However, the 5-star-rated comedy took home $27.6 million in a first-place finish at the North American box office.
Ouija: Origin of Evil made its box office introduction with a distant $14.1 million over the late October weekend. The flick, which follows a family whose seance scams awaken a real-life demonic possession, is currently rated 4 stars at Tribute.ca.
Following its first-place debut last weekend, The Accountant dropped three spots to land in fourth with $14.0 million. As of this weekend, the Ben Affleck-starring film, rated a near-perfect 4.8 stars among Tribute’s users, has earned close to $60 million at the worldwide box office.
The Girl on the Train managed to hold onto the top five in its third weekend in theaters. Rated 3 stars at Tribute.ca, the thriller adaptation starring Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, and Luke Evans added another $7.3 million to its over $100 million global haul, now more than doubling its $45 million budget.
