Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam gets spin-off movie

Dwayne Johnson is having a pretty stellar 2017. After picking up a People’s Choice Award earlier this week for Favorite Premium Series Actor, news has broken that his DC villain character Black Adam will be the subject of his own film.

Black Adam is the antagonist in the upcoming movie Shazam! According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dwayne has been attached to play Black Adam in the film since the late 2000s. But just yesterday (Jan. 19), New Line Cinema and DC Entertainment announced that Dwayne’s Black Adam will be given a spin-off picture.

Specific details on the film haven’t been released.

However, more is known about Shazam! As reported by Variety, Darren Lemke (Jack the Giant Slayer, Goosebumps) is penning the script, which will explore the feud between the central character — one of the oldest comic heroes originally known as Captain Marvel — and his arch-nemesis Black Adam.

The protagonist in Shazam! is teenager Billy Batson, who transforms into a superhero after uttering the word “Shazam!” The Hollywood Reporter describes the word as “an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Aries, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.” No actor has been cast to play the lead role at this time.

Following his meeting with DC Films co-head and comics writer Geoff Johns, Dwayne, 44, teased fans on Instagram with a photo of himself in front of the DC logo. With his caption, he promised “Hope, optimism & FUN.”

Had a very cool and strategic meeting with the heads of DC about their entire universe. As a hard core DC fan, to get a real sense of the tonal shifts and developments coming in these future movies has me fired up. Something we, as DC fans have all been waiting for for a very long time. Hope, optimism & FUN. Even when talking about the the most ruthless villain/anti-hero of all time finally coming to life. Prepare yourselves DC Universe. #KneelAtHisFeet #OrGetCrushedByHisBoot #BlackAdam⚡️

I’m not too interested… but who knows. Let’s see what happens after the Flash and Aquaman and Justice League come out. Hope they are better written and filmed properties then I’d gie Shazam/Black Adam a try.

A movie about a villain? Another comic book movie? Hollywood is saturated with this garbage. Enough already.

Hope this time they get a better director and follow the latest source material as it is.
