Emma Watson linked to Panama Papers leak

By Tribute on May 12, 2016 | 9 Comments

Emma WatsonEmma Watson is known as crafty, spell-casting, rule-abiding witch Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films. But recent reports paint the actress in a questionable, suspicious light.

The 26-year-old actress’s name has been listed in the infamous Panama Papers scandal, which is a cache of over 11 million confidential documents from a Panama law firm leaked by a group  of journalists. The documents detail how some of the world’s richest and most powerful people hide their wealth in tax havens and offshore accounts.

The journalists responsible for leaking the documents disclosed the identities of those with offshore accounts this past Monday.

A representative for Emma was pushed to respond to the news and through a statement, said the actress only set up an account to protect personal details about herself.

The statements reads, “Emma (like many high-profile individuals) set up an offshore company for the sole purpose of protecting her anonymity and safety. U.K. companies are required to publicly publish details of their shareholders and therefore do not give her the necessary anonymity required to protect her personal safety, which has been jeopardized in the past owing to such information being publicly available.”

It goes on to say Emma, “…receives absolutely no tax or monetary advantages from this offshore company whatsoever – only privacy.”

Emma is not the only celebrity whose name was published. Simon Cowell, Sarah Ferguson, Pedro Almodóvar, Jackie Chan and several world leaders, including British Prime Minister David Cameron, have been mentioned.

In total, information on nearly 320,000 offshore accounts has been divulged.

How does holding an offshore account give you any more privacy than if you have a bank account in your own country?

What a crock of bullshit. You’re involved in something illegal, just own up to it. Hey, I love money too and if I could hide it, you know I would! Guess she’s not the strong independent women empowering the feminazis anymore or the philanthropist she loves to call herself.

Nooooo! Jackie Chan, why!? You have betrayed my childhood memories of you

Owning an offshore bank account is not illegal. Using it to launder funds or transfer wealth outside of one’s country or avoid paying income tax is illegal. Offshore bank accounts or numbered holding companies can be setup by anyone. It’s what people have done with them in the past that makes them sketchy.

I hate paying taxes because my meagre pension would get me by if I didn’t have to. I wonder if there are wealthy people from socialist countries like Norway who are hiding money off shore. Somehow I doubt it. Yeah Emma is avoiding taxes.
But wouldn’t you if the laws were lax. Do you think anyone revealed in the Panama Papers will be punished?

I hate paying taxes too. Especially since I don’t have children. Single people shouldn’t have to pay school taxes.

Unlike some of the other commenters, I have not read anywhere that she is avoiding paying taxes. As Winston stated, “owning an offshore bank account is not illegal”. What I infer from the statement is that Ms. Watson uses these offshore accounts as a shareholder of some UK companies. Since the account is a numbered account, her name will not be included in the list of shareholders for those companies.

As long as she pays taxes on the money she receives, it doesn’t matter where she stores it.

@Catherine-My children will be paying for your pension from the government so you should assist in their education through your taxes. That is how this democracy works; if you don’t like it you are free to go to a Communist country.

@Catherine – those children will be our future doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, bankers, politicians, veterinarians, architects, scientists, etc. One of those children very might be YOUR doctor one day and I would imagine you’d want an educated one. Unless you never get sick, drive on a road or a bridge, or vote, then I suggest you move to mountain cave and stay there.
