Eva Longoria defends Devious Maids show

Eva Longoria is defending her upcoming show Devious Maids against criticism that it portrays stereotypes of household workers. The show follows the lives of five Latina maids who work in posh Beverly Hills homes. Eva, who is one of the executive producers of the Marc Cherry-created dramedy, says the stories depicted in the show are worth telling. “With the demographics of the United States changing rapidly, we should represent our diverse country on television,” the actress said during a Rogers Media media event. The cast includes Ana Ortiz, Roselyn Sanchez and Susan Lucci. As noted by Eva, it’s the first show ever to have five Latina leads in television. Of Mexican background herself, the former Desperate Housewives star retaliated to critics of the show, saying, “It’s a fact that we do make up a large percentage of domestic workers, and so when somebody criticizes us saying, ‘Why are you telling their stories, it’s so stereotypical?’ I always say back, ‘You’re telling me their stories aren’t worth telling, that maids are not complex, that they don’t have a life, that they don’t have a story to tell, and they do.'” ~Rebecca Raveendran
