Gwyneth Paltrow lets kids go hungry

By Alexandra Heilbron on March 14, 2013 | 21 Comments

In her new cookbook, It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great, Gwyneth Paltrow admits that her children – Apple, 8, and Moses, 6 – go hungry due to the diet she has them on. The actress, who is married to Coldplay’s Chris Martin, believes gluten and carbs have to be avoided to have a healthy diet. “Every single nutritionist, doctor and health-conscious person I have ever come across…seems to concur that [gluten] is tough on the system and many of us are at best intolerant of it and at worst allergic to it,” she wrote in her book. However, a diet without carbohydrates, which provide energy to  the body’s muscles, brain and central nervous system, leaves people feeling hungry, which Gwyneth readily admits, writing, “Sometimes when my family is not eating pasta, bread or processed grains like white rice, we’re left with that specific hunger that comes with avoiding carbs.”

I’m getting really tired of the way Tribute titles their articles and writes their news items in a very misleading way. It is obvious to the reader of the above if you have any sense that she is NOT saying she lets them go hungry – but that they still miss the carbs they do not eat. Anyone who has had to deny themselves certain carbs due to dietary needs such as diabetes can attest that you still hunger for these foods – however it doesn’t mean you go HUNGRY. There is a HUGE difference. I can understand titling articles to catch a readers interest but the above title could be considered borderline slanderous as child abuse. The same could be said for the Britney Spears commando article – if all the people saw were her buttocks then it is quite possible that she was wearing a thong. This is rag mag journalism at its best and I always considered Tribute above that. Shame on you.

What’s worse? Overfeeding your kid so she’s an obese little pig or starving them so they’re skinny?

  3. Charles • March 14, 2013 @ 11:00 AM

Brain-eating zombies will starve if they try feeding on Gwyneth Paltrow.

Her children are still growing and need the carbs for energy. I’m sure they play and run around, why have them feeling starved? Worry about what they’re eating when they reach adolescence and their teen years when all they’ll be eating is junk.

I don’t get diets. I get some people cut out gluten because their body has a hard time digesting them but seriously man. It’s called eating a “balanced diet” for a reason. Eating in MODERATION gives what you need in all food groups and it’s not hurting anyone!

Yeeaah…I wonder if she ever asked “is it good for my kids to be on this diet, or do they still need the carbs?”

I’m so tired of this ‘gluten is evil’ philosophy pushed upon us by celebrities and your local health nuts. The healthiest diets in the world, proven by actual science, are the Japanese and Mediterranean diets. And you know what people? They both contain carbs: rice for the Japanese being a staple and pasta and breads for the Mediterranean. As Patrick said: everything in moderation. If this whole no carbs thing was really working, why is the obesity rate higher than ever? Those who follow fanatical diets look haggard. Depriving your body of the easy energy it needs is just plain stupid.

Your ignorance is showing. She isn’t saying she starves her children. She is following a very healthy way of eating a natural diet. She does not eat processed foods, breads, gluten etc. You still get plenty of carbohydrates from fruits and veggies. Stop being a tool and educate yourself. I just had a great conversation about this very subject with a gastroenterologist the other day while on a clinical rotation.

Way to make it sound like she’s an abusive mom when she actually has them on a healthy diet.

  10. Lea • April 3, 2013 @ 11:34 PM

Pasta, bread, and such are the foundation of health… You need carbohydrates, but in moderation.
What in the hell, Gwyneth? She may not be “starving” her children, but she is ruining their health.
Honestly, it is abusive. She admits to KNOWING this is bad shit.
I don’t give a shit what you dumb mother f***ers say, she needs to be burned.

As a diabetic, I wish someone would tell this misinformed Mother how important carbs are. I don’t mean let them eat half a cake, and fruits as the best source it carbs are important to brain function. Ever see a diabetic when his sugar levels drop? Shakes, confusions and emotional changes.

I think people make food such a complicated matter. Balance it out. What happened to the good old food pyramid? A square meal? I give me kids cut up fruit as snacks (apples, oranges, grapes, dried apricots, pears, dates, melon)with cheese sticks I cut up and they really enjoy it. I don’t buy soda or chips and people tell me I’m extreme. Boil some pasta and melt some cheese with butter and milk and don’t buy the instant mac and cheese and you’ve got a healthier version of the instant box crap I grew up with. My little one calls it cheesy spider webs which makes it even more yummy I guess, boys! Unless you’ve got celiac disease you shouldn’t be cutting out carbs, that’s nuts.

  13. Elizabeth • April 28, 2013 @ 11:14 PM

Those kids should be taken away… Carbs are important. What an idiot.

  14. Antonio • May 3, 2013 @ 3:16 PM

Starving them? No. Definitely not. Feeding them a superficial and terrible diet? Yes. She cares too much about appearance; anyone who’s seen her on any interviews knows that. She’s a stuck up, self centered bitch.
Her kids are going to be really short, and really skinny. If they dont get those carbs and energies growing up, they won’t grow properly. They’ll have tons of deficiencies and if they’re smart at all, they’ll hate her when they’re in their 20s and done growing. They’ll be so fucked up they’ll be on supplements well into their forties.

  15. mikie • May 14, 2013 @ 12:03 PM

umm, they’re 6 and 8.. and as long as they’re not morbidly obese, there is NO need for them to be on a diet

  16. mikie • May 14, 2013 @ 12:03 PM

p.s. her daughter looks MISERABLE in this picture

  17. Chris • May 17, 2013 @ 11:29 PM

You’re all kidding, right? Where does anything in this article imply she is starving her kids or depriving them of proper nutrition? It doesn’t.

One can lead a perfectly balanced, healthy diet without eating breads and pasta. A diet with enough fruits and veggies can provide plenty of fiber and carbs.

You all, and the author, need to learn a bit about nutrition (and reading comprehension). This whole story is idiotic.

On a quick google search, one of her recipes is a black bean and sweet potato chili. Guess what the primary macronutrient is in that? If you don’t know what macronutrients are, or you need to google search it, you don’t have a leg to stand on.

This is disgusting. It’s okay to try and teach your kids healthy choices, like fruit over cake, but these kids are going to be anorexic. This is major eating disorder promotion : cutting out or eliminating a certain type of thing like carbs or fat or calories or sugar. I’m disgusted. I always disliked her but never knew why. They’re going to have so many nutrition deficiencies, and, they’re going to have a tainted mind as well, and grow up feeling like they can’t eat certain things.

  19. Buni • May 21, 2013 @ 6:27 PM

I think she is selfish and needs to get them on a healthier diet.
You should NEVER feel hungry on any type of diet. A real healthy diet would satisfy your hunger pains.
Just because she is paranoid about gaining weight does not mean she should have her kids on her diet.
They are children and their needs are different than an adults.

  20. Shellandty • June 6, 2013 @ 11:15 AM

You cannot avoid all carbs BC carbs are in fruits and vegetables too. I’m sure she meant simple carbs not complex carbs. BIG difference.

  21. that it is right in between and much simpler to walk in rather than a 4.5 centimeter cakcaneus bone.
