Earliest Christmas memory was sneaking out of my room Christmas eve night and seeing that dad had left a bottle of beer for Santa, no milk and cookies.
Every Christmas as a child was spent at my Grandmother’s cottage. There was a fold out sofa in the living room, and I insisted that I was going to sleep beside the fire place (which was actually a real wood burning, chimney bearing fireplace), on that fold out sofa and wait for Santa. Well, I woke up that morning in the “bunk-bed room”, and came out at about 6 A.M. before any one else was awake to the fire burning low, the sun barely rising over the snow covered lake, and stockings stuffed full. It was a magical memory, and thinking back to it, a little part of me still believes that Santa came that night.

Another memory is: my best friend and her sister opening a present while their parents were away, playing it for an hour or so (it was a Simon game) and then re-wrapping it and placing it back under the tree. And another one…we had gone to my Grandma’s house for Christmas (which was a few hours away). We had left our kitties at home overnight, and when we came home, there was a letter to my brother and I from Santa in their pet bed with them!! Santa had come to our house even though we had been away!

I used to live in Southern Europe as a young child… I have these memories of walking down cobbled streets, holding my mother or father’s hand, all bundled up against the cold; my breath puffing out and frosting around me. The old buildings were draped in garlands and lights and everything seemed so magical. I could hear music being played all around me. And there would street vendors on every corner, roasting chestnuts in their mobile roasters. The sounds of them spinning the roasting wheel, while they sang out their wares; the smell permeating the streets. And my parent would always buy me a $0.50 package, wrapped in a newspaper cone, steam coming off the brown, little nuggets of deliciousness. That is one of my earliest memories and when I think about it… It invokes feelings of safety, security, wonder and the magic of the season.
