American Honey leads Independent Spirit Awards nominations

The red carpets are ready to roll out and film fans are anxious to learn which pictures will pick up the top prizes. Awards season is approaching.

Nominees for the 32nd annual Independent Spirit Awards were announced Tuesday, Nov. 22, and the critically acclaimed American Honey and Moonlight lead the charge.

Andrea Arnold’s road drama and Barry Jenkins’ intimate coming-of-age tale were honored with six nominations each. Kenneth Lonergan‘s drama Manchester by the Sea with Casey Affleck followed closely with five nods, while the Natalie Portman-led Jackie scored four.

Along with Casey and Natalie, who both earned recognition for their work this year, award season veterans — including Annette Bening (20th Century Women), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Ralph Fiennes (A Bigger Splash) — were also nominated for their respective films.

First-time nominees include Sasha Lane (American Honey), Ruth Negga (Loving), Ben Foster (Hell or High Water), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea) and Shia LaBeouf (American Honey).

Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea), Joel Edgerton (Loving), Adam Driver (Paterson), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) and Rebecca Hall (Christine) were among the surprise snubs.

The Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, the day before the Oscars.

I’m surprised none of the actors in Moonlight were nominated. But I’m really happy for Annette Bening and Isabelle Huppert!
