Argo tops the box office

This weekend’s top box office spot goes to political thriller Argo, which climbed from last week’s number two spot, raking in an estimated $12.36 million. Starring and directed by Ben Affleck, Argo is loosely based on C.I.A. operative Tony Mendez’s rescue of six U.S. diplomats during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis and holds a respectable 4 out of 5 possible stars on Tribute.ca. Animated comedy Hotel Transylvania came in second in its fifth week at the box office. Jumping from last week’s fourth place, Adam Sandler’s luxury resort for monsters movie, Hotel Transylvania, made $9.5 million and earned 4 stars on Tribute.ca—dropping only one point from its debut weekend’s 5 star rating.

Coming in a very close third place is Tony TykwerLana and Andy Wachowski’s Cloud Atlas, which made a modest $9.4 million in its debut weekend. Starring Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and many more A-listers, this multi-plot sci-fi puzzle holds a a moderate 3 star rating on Tribute.ca. In fourth is Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman’s Paranormal Activity 4. Dropping three places from its opening weekend, the fourth installment in this shaky-cam horror series made only $8.8 million but holds a positive 4 star rating on Tribute.ca. Creepy video game adaptation Silent Hill: Revelation 3D debuted at number 5, making $8 million. Don’t let its low gross fool you, as Michael J. Basset’s sequel starring rising Aussie star Adelaide Clemmens has 4 stars from Tribute.ca users.  ~Brandon Bastaldo

I think we’ve been bombarded lately with horror movies and I think people are getting tired of them. Argo went from 2 weeks in second up to first now. I think that’s great and a testiment to Affleck’s directing and a true story between two countries working together. More people should see this movie. I hope he gets an Academy award nomination.

Argo = unchallenging TV movie quality blandness for a generally undiscerning north american audience. it’s like watching a diaper commercial, only paying $20 to do so.
