Avatar sets new record

Avatar, the new movie from Canadian filmmaker James Cameron, exploded in theaters over the weekend. The sci-fi flick is said to be the most expensive film ever made.  Though the movie was made for just over $400 million including marketing, it rocked the box office during opening weekend. The 3D film earned $73 million opening day in America. Worldwide, the film opened in 106 countries, bringing in $232.2 million.  In IMAX, the film grossed a record breaking $9.5 million domestically with IMAX theatres operating at virtually full capacity all weekend — many locations added 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. shows to meet high consumer demand. The film is now the record-setting 3D film for first-day revenue.  The record was previously held by last summer’s Up, which earned $68.1 million during its theater debut. Fox International Theatrical, the film’s worldwide distributor, confirmed that the James Cameron flick opened at the number 1 spot in all countries. ~Martin D’Anjou
