Indian cinema’s stellar biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag released last Friday and received rave reviews from the film critics and fans worldwide. The film has become the third-highest opening film in India of 2013. In the U.K., the film was listed in the top 10 of the box office charts. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the film is based on the life of iconic Indian athlete Milkha Singh. It shows the many challenges he faced in his life, including witnessing the brutal murder of his parents, homelessness, a traumatic childhood and a life of petty crime. Through sheer will and determination, he overcame his personal loss and strives for professional victory. After watching the film, American track and field star Carl Lewis expressed his appreciation by personally calling Milkha Singh. According to the Los Angeles Times, the “stirring biography” was “beautifully shot.” Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan wrote on his blog: “This is an extraordinary film, and made with equal aplomb and measure. The story of Milkha Singh is legend now, but to see it relived in today’s time was an unbelievable experience.” The film is currently playing across Canada in select theaters.
