Christian Bale ran into a little trouble while in China to promote to his state-backed Chinese film The Flowers of War, a 1930s war drama set in Nanjing. The Oscar-winning actor was attempting to pay a visit to a human rights lawyer, Chen Ghuangcheng, who has been living under house arrest for the past year. Bale was accompanied by a CNN crew, who managed to capture footage of Bale being shoved by the flock of guards stationed outside Ghuangcheng’s home.
"What I really wanted to do was to meet the man, shake his hand and say what an inspiration he is," Bale said. The actor had heard of Ghungcheng in news reports while filming The Flowers of War, which is about a Westerner who finds refuge with a group of women in a church during Japan’s rape of Nanking in 1937. The film will be China’s submission to the Oscars for best foreign film.
