George Clooney accuses Daily Mail of inciting violence

British newspaper Daily Mail issued an apology to George Clooney after publishing an article alleging his fiancée’s mother, Baria Alamuddin was opposed to her daughter Amal Alamuddin’s marriage on religious grounds. Gravity star George was quick to correct the newspaper, calling the article, which cited unnamed family “friends” as their source, “completely fabricated.” In the article, Baria claims to want her 36-year-old daughter to marry a Druse man and says the consequence of marrying Clooney means Amal will be “cast out of the community.” The article mentioned other several women who had been murdered for not abiding by strict Druse rules.

Clooney issued a statement to USA Today, assuring them his future mother-in-law “is in no way against the marriage.” He went on to criticize the Daily Mail by saying, “We have family members all over the world, and the idea that someone would inflame any part of that world for the sole reason of selling papers should be criminal,” and accused the newspaper of “inciting violence.”

In response, the paper removed the article from its website, issuing the following apology: “We accept Mr. Clooney’s assurance that the story is inaccurate and we apologize to him, Miss Amal Alamuddin and her mother, Baria, for any distress caused and will be contacting Mr. Clooney’s representatives to discuss giving him the opportunity to set the record straight.” ~Andrea Hodgins
