Dakota Fanning considered for Twilight sequel

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 30, 2009 | 41 Comments

Dakota FanningDakota Fanning, 14, has confirmed that she’s in talks to play the role of Jane, a tiny blonde but sadistic member of the Volturi vampire clan in the Twilight sequel New Moon. “I really hope it works out,” she told Hitfix.com. “I think it’s too soon to tell right now, but it’d be really fun. I’m a huge fan.” According to Twist Magazine, Lucy Hale, who stars on the CW series Privileged has also auditioned for the same role. She told Twist: “Well, I did read [for the role of Jane]. But I think they just offered it to Dakota Fanning – the role I was interested in – which is great. I’m a huge fan of her! But I’m definitely still going to see it!” When asked if she would accept another role in New Moon if it were offered to her, she replied, “I’d take any role! Leah Clearwater, but I think they’ve already offered it to someone. I mean, we’ll see.” When it was pointed out that High School Musical‘s Vanessa Hudgens had been rumored to be up for the part of the Leah, who is Native American, Hale said: “Right, right, right! Yeah, I wasn’t sure if that was true or not, but she’d be great for it!” If Fanning gets the role, the media will breath a huge sigh of relief, because she’s proven herself adept at handling press interviews since she was seven, unlike Twilight star Kristen Stewart (who made her motion picture starring debut at the age of 12 but is still unable to speak coherently in front of cameras when not reading a script).

Kristen Stewart couldn’t speak coherently even when reading from a script.

  2. Alan • January 30, 2009 @ 12:49 PM

Too bad she’s not taking over Kristen Stewart’s role.

  3. Gary • January 30, 2009 @ 12:50 PM

I still say Kristen Stewart has “problems”, which I’m surprised havn’t become public by now.

  4. ke • January 30, 2009 @ 12:52 PM

i think Kirsten Stwerart is a good actress (better than most of her contemporaries for sure) and I think Dakota Fanning is a fantastic one, for her age especially. I can’t believe just how many Twilight fans there actually are. I’ve read them and unfortunately, one of the only few good things about the books is the character of Jacob.

  5. Not Impressed with Twilight Cast • January 30, 2009 @ 1:00 PM

It would be really great if they could scap this whole thing and start over, who ever cast Kristen Stewart and Rob Patterson as Bella and Edward obviously didn’t put much thought into it, they were absolutely horrible. Dakota Fanning would be great as Jane, now let’s just start over from the beginning with casting and maybe my favorite book series wouldn’t be such a drag to watch!!

  6. Karina • January 30, 2009 @ 2:01 PM

I actually loved Kristen Stewart and Rob Pattinson as Bella and Edward, and Taylor is absolutely amazing as Jacob, but would be a lot better without his wig. As for Dakota Fanning, I don’t know … I don’t really see her as being Jane =[

  7. Anonymous • January 30, 2009 @ 2:12 PM

i agree with ‘not impressed with twilight cast’

  8. Leah • January 30, 2009 @ 2:13 PM

Dakota would make an amazing Jane! As for Edward and Bella! they’re great too! LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!! (what Kristen does on her own time is no ones business.)I still wished Michael Copon was the new Jacob! That MAN is hot whereas Taylor is a boy!

  9. Newfiegirl • January 30, 2009 @ 2:15 PM

I’m a huge fan of the books!!!
And have been saying for months that Dakota would be the perfect Jane.

i like the movies the way they are, i don’t want anyone ‘famous’ to be in them cuz then it just messes it up. i hate it when ‘famous’ ppl do that. let the other actors/actresses get a chance to shine, they’ve already had more than enough of their share.

  11. Anonymous • January 30, 2009 @ 3:15 PM

I think that they shouldn’t being adding well know actors they are going to be taking away from edward and bella.

  12. Ray Ray • January 30, 2009 @ 3:20 PM

She is going to turn into a drug addict like Kristen Stewart. Kristen will teach her the ropes to be a terrible actress too.

  13. Anonymous • January 30, 2009 @ 3:21 PM

I agree! I hate it when famous actors jump on the bandwagon. Leave Twilight pure and let lesser known actors take some parts. It’s so going to suck if all the new roles get filled up with people we’ve seen a hundred times in other films. 🙁

  14. twilight fan • January 30, 2009 @ 3:55 PM

Well…I don’t picture Dakota fanning as Jane the way she is described in the books from what I remember is someone brunett, older about 18, because shes suppose to be the size of Alice and for those Twilight fans who remeber Jane has to kiss Aro (It’s in the new moon book)…Yes Dakota could do okay as Jane, but I feel she is too young too do it esspecially if she has to kiss the actor who I’ve heard has been considered for Aro. Altogether I think that so far they have a great cast, but they need to pay close attention to the books because take Leah Clearwater fo example is at least 18 years of age because think about how old Sam is(They use to date). I’ve heard a lot of really dumb casting news with this movie and I’ve only really heard one not dumb idea for a character(Aro).CASTING FOR NEW MOON MUST BE AMAZING!!(The voulturri esspecially)

  15. APACHI • January 30, 2009 @ 5:03 PM

I guess that’s the whole idea of poor acting by someone who shouldn’t be in this field, so who are we to judge, unless you can do better?

As a friend who is a casting director told me, they are people like you and I, no different, so they have problems, who doesn’t.

It’s sad that people just like to make trouble, but perhaps what your opinion says about them, perhaps might stear them in the right direction and perhaps not.

As I always say, society will protect one and destroy the other, because they are cruel, ignorant and just plain mean.

Oh and btw, people who are actors, don’t like to be called a Celebrity, because to them it’s a demeaner says; Kevin Spacey who see’s himself as a hard working professional like anybody else.

  16. jen • January 30, 2009 @ 5:09 PM

it isn’t fair dakota gets whatever she wants to her on a silver platter. I’ve been trying to get the role of jane in mew moon for about 2 years and i don’t even get a chance!!! i would could and hopefully will be a better Jane then Daokta! If u no anyone that can help me get the role of jane tell me on this thing and ill give you more details. ThAnX yOu RoCk!!!

  17. Nicole • January 30, 2009 @ 6:06 PM

i think dakota is amazing she is perfect to be jane

  18. Taylor • January 30, 2009 @ 6:59 PM

she doesnt deserve to be jane! jane is an adult!!!!!!!!!! omg everyone thinks dakota fanning is so awesome but she is soooooooooooooooooooooooo not… and vanessa as leah? ugh that wont work at all… its too bad they are taking all the characters that have made themselves known as someone else. vanessa will always be gabriella to me and now gabriella is in twilight… ugh

  19. Brittiany • January 30, 2009 @ 6:59 PM

I dont think Dakota Fanning would play this part well One I think shes a to well known actress it would be hard to get past her other characters she has played Two most of her other characters were sweet little kids in the book Jane to me is sweet looking thats about as far as the sweetness goes with her I dont think Dakota could pull off this evil spirted little vampire
I also agree with people saying they need to bring new actors and actress’s in and keep twilight from having all this high roller actress and actors

  20. Jessey • January 30, 2009 @ 7:37 PM

Dear “Not Impressed with Twilight Cast”: I absolutely agree with you. Robert Pattinson was horribly casted. He did not portray Edwards character at all. Instead he was a horny-80-yearl-old-virgin-vampire. Im trully dissapointed by his performance. To me he kind of ruined the Twilight movie.

  21. sk8tergirl • January 31, 2009 @ 11:44 AM

When reading the part with Jane I thought, “Hey, they should get Dakota fanning to play her in the movie!” I hope she gets the role.

  22. Aimee • January 31, 2009 @ 1:32 PM

All I have to say is I love EDWARD!!! And I feel that Rob Pattinson fit the role perfectly. He has me dazzled!!!!

  23. Jeri • January 31, 2009 @ 4:13 PM

You know, I agree COMPLETELY with not impressed with twilight cast guy! This movie had Such potential, and well, the acting was shotty, the story, not according to the book, and they played it too awkward! I think they should redo it, like, what was up with the sparkly Edward?! He was supposed to be like diamonds!
And putting “actors” in the roles doesn’t work. Let us take a look at the Phantom of the Opera for a moment…the director didn’t want actors, he wanted people who fit the part and played it well. he didn’t want Anyone for their name! And that was a good movie, not fake. This, was a complete masicure!
I was very much saddened to see this film, I believe it disgraced the books, and it never showed the audience who HAD NOT read the books as to what it was really about! This didn’t show the audence why it was so loved, and trashed it instead.
So yes, it should either be COMPLETELY recast, and if they refuse to redo it and give us something WORTH watching, maybe if they didn’t ruin the NEXT movie it wouldn’t be as bad…MAYBE.
As for the Dakota quesiton…she should not play the role. From what I have seen, she is good at doing the annoying scream, what a talent that is. I do not believe she is old enough, mature enough, or has any other requirements to fit this role. Jane is supposed to be evil, bent on hurting people and taking great pleasure in it. This is not a role Miss Fanning would do well in.

  24. Anonymous • January 31, 2009 @ 10:29 PM

Im all for Dakota fanning she is a great actress and i can really see her in this part. But Vanessa Hudgens as leah!?! its just not right and Kristen Stewart should defiantly be replaced. The first movie was good but it would have been fantastic of we didnt have to sit and watch Kristen Stewart stutter and shake throughout the movie it was really annoying. They really should cast someone who can act or at least can talk like a normal human being.

  25. Cathy • January 31, 2009 @ 11:28 PM

Jeri’s right. twilight had SO MUCH potential as a movie… until rob and kristen came along.

for one thing, robert played edward as an AWKWARD guy. flahsback to: high school hallway scene, bio field trip scene, woods scene, etc… yes, he was awkward and embarrassing. WHEN IN FACT, edward cullen is supposed to be the smoothest, most charming man you have ever seen.

and bella… ok, i know she’s not supposed to be as bubbly and hyper as jessica stanley, but she’s not MONOTONE either! the bella that i love from the book actually HAS a personality, and is CAPABLE of showing some emotion once in a while. but unfortunately kristen stewart played bella exactly how SHE IS in real life. common, have you seen her interviews? she’s not the most heart warming person.

    sigh. such a disappointment.

ok, rant over. feel free to bash me.

  26. Vicki • February 1, 2009 @ 8:25 AM

Jeri and Cathy, I think your character analyses of Edward and Bella are EXACTLY RIGHT. I blame the movie’s misguided portrayals on the director more than the actors, but I don’t think that Robert and Kristen look the parts either, or have the charisma to carry these roles (Robert in particular). “Such a disappointment” is right, and double “sigh” goes for me…

  27. tributegirl • February 1, 2009 @ 8:00 PM

Have you read these books, Vicki? I’m almost done the 3rd, and Robert and Kristen don’t look ANYTHING like what I picture from the books.

  28. Erin • February 1, 2009 @ 8:23 PM

I’ve read all four books, as well as the partial draft of Midnight Sun. I agree that Kristen Stewart played the role of Bella all wrong. I think that’s largely the director’s fault; she let her get away with that. Kristen said in interviews that she thought “depressed” was the way to go and she was glad she was allowed to play it that way. As for Robert, at first I didn’t know why he was playing it like that, but I’ve read since that Stephenie Meyer gave him Midnight Sun to read and he played it exactly how she wrote it. Midnight Sun is Twilight, from Edward’s point of view. I think the writing could’ve been better in the movie; for instance, he comes out of nowhere to tell her they shouldn’t be friends… ouch. And the trip to the greenhouse? Wha…? Why couldn’t they just have kept the scene in the cafeteria where they have their first big discussion? It was one of my favourite scenes, I don’t know why they had to have that awful greenhouse scene instead. And in that scene, which isn’t in either book (Twilight or Midnight Sun), yep, Edward seemed pretty awkward. And in the scene where he’s sitting with Charlie at the kitchen table before prom, he seemed awkward there when he’s actually way older than Charlie and never feels awkward with Charlie because to him, Charlie is a child. So I can see what you’re saying about Robert playing him as awkward but again, all the director would’ve had to do was say, “Well, okay, but now do it again and be more self assured.” IMO, the director was the root cause of all the problems in the first movie.

  29. Vicki • February 1, 2009 @ 8:45 PM

I’ve read the first two books and am waiting for my daughter to lend me the third and fourth. I really enjoyed them and was looking forward to the movie until I saw the two stars. Neither one looks remotely how I pictured them! Oh well, guess it’s nothing new when books are far better than their movie versions. Although I have to say that most of the Harry Potter characters are EXACTLY how I pictured them (except Hermione)… especially Harry himself and Snape.

  30. Erin • February 1, 2009 @ 9:42 PM

I wanted to add that Edward sparkled exactly how I pictured it. I agree, neither Kristen nor Rob look as though I’d pictured them either. I really liked Alice and Jacob but most of the characters didn’t look anything like I’d pictured them, and since we all probably pictured different people in our minds, I can’t fault the casting in that sense. I hated Carlisle’s makeup and hair, I hope they get that better next time, ditto Jasper. And Kristen was such a disappointment. Lookswise, she was okay but where was her personality? Rob kind of grew on me after awhile. I hate when movies/tv shows are recast, so I hope the next director can do something with the cast he has. But as for casting people who are already stars in any future roles, I’m against it. I’d prefer to have good actors, but no-names, so that we’re not watching, thinking, Oh, yeah, there’s Dakota. Although she probably would make a decent Jane, who’s basically the ickiest character ever. But I’m sure someone with acting experience, but who isn’t famous, can do the job just as well, if not better.

  31. demigod • February 1, 2009 @ 11:44 PM

I think it’s time to throw in some black vampires.

  32. tributegirl • February 3, 2009 @ 7:38 PM

There was one in the movie, demigod, guess you missed him!

  33. demigod • February 3, 2009 @ 9:33 PM

Maybe so T.G., but he wasn’t front and center. You know, like Will Smith in Hancock, as the black superman with an attitude. That’s what I’m waiting for..

  34. demigod • February 3, 2009 @ 10:21 PM

To the people at Tribute, thanks for letting me post my borderline comments lol. I know some of them can be misconstrued as racist, but rest assured they’re not meant to be.

  35. Anonymous • February 4, 2009 @ 7:42 AM

there are black vampires in the movie

  36. tributegirl • February 4, 2009 @ 11:02 AM

True enough demigod. Actually, I had wondered about that, the way the other vampires glittered in the sun like a million diamonds, I’d like to see what the black vampire looked like in the sun, I’m guessing he would’t glitter in the same way.

  37. Satine • February 5, 2009 @ 5:26 PM

they should cast actors who are not well know. vanessa hudgens better not be in new moon because she is already famous for high school musical and you can’t mix the two together. As for Dakota…i don’t hate her and i think she is an amazing actress but i really don’t want her in new moon because she has been in to many well known movies.

  38. Naveen • February 6, 2009 @ 6:35 PM

Vanessa Hudgesons? Please, no. In no way is she suitable for the franchise. It would just bring its level down even lower. Imagine the scene: teen girl comes rushing over to her friends. “OMG, OMG! The girl from High School Musical is going to be in New Moon!” Her friends either snicker or jump with glee.

No. We don’t need people to add to the snickering about these books… neither do we need to add to the jumping for glee.

In fact, why don’t we just get some actors whom no one has heard of, who are suitably amateur, and call it a day? Like, why not? It’d be fun. Just as much as fun as Twilight, eh people?

  39. Jeri • February 7, 2009 @ 9:15 PM

Agreed. I already had to listen to ENOUGH teenage girls giggle and whatnot in the first movie! It was hard to even hear what was going on because of how loud they were!
As for the black vampire, that would have been Laurent. And I’m not saying that they shouldn’t have had more cultures in there and I’m not racist. But I believe that he was too dark….in the books, when it talked about the Italians, it had said how there were slightly tanned and still pale, Laurent didn’t even strike me as a vampire.
I did like the eyes tho, I felt that those were not a disapointment.

  40. Ariel Elizabeth • February 8, 2009 @ 10:47 PM
