Daniel Craig believes world ready for black Bond

By Alexandra Heilbron on November 7, 2008 | 28 Comments

daniel_craig.jpgDaniel Craig, who created controversy when he was first cast as James Bond because he’s blond, believes the world is now ready for a black Bond. Currently on a tour to promote the new Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, he told a packed press conference at the St. Regis Hotel in Rome: “After Barack Obama’s victory I think we might have reached the moment for a colored 007. I think the role is well suited to a colored actor, because the character created by Ian Fleming in the ’50s has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated.” He added, “However, I think this eventually would probably make Fleming turn in his grave.” Although a Brit, Craig went on to praise Obama, saying, “I’m a true fan of Obama and have always been because the political ideas that come out of his speeches seem authentic.”

Most politicians “seem” authentic! I think 007 should be a woman!!

“Tyrese” Gibson would be a WICKED Bond!!! or even Blair Underwood…

I’m not sure i’m liking the use of the word “colored”.
I’m a huge fan of Bond movies, and i’m black. But I know that hollywood would probably turn it into a comedy with Chris Rock as Bond or something.
But if it were serious, I think Blair Underwood, Will Smith(without the jokes), Wesley Snipes or Taye Diggs would do a great job.

what if shaft suddenly became white . there would be some sort of uproar in the black community or aunt Jemima even , bond is white not black not Asian (WHITE)stop trying to change everything it will never work and then there truly will be some sort of race war, who cares what Daniel Craig says , whats next a black harry potter . this is getting ridiculous! enough is enough people

I’m black and believe in being open minded
But give it a rest, the bond series has worked out well over the years with a white british male. why change a good thing?
As stated above would’nt want to see asian or white shaft….please

I never thought I’d be saying this, but….I agree with what nat just said!

Michael, I noticed the word “coloured” too, and I agree, it just didn’t seem right. I’m not saying it was wrong, but it didn’t feel right.

Waaaaaait a minute….Nancy and nat agree on something??? Now come on, I don’t think the world is quite ready for THAT!

Ykes! where is this comin from? especially since its been reported that Daniel has signed up for a long term stint as Bond…
    just a silly comment!

  11. Demigod • November 8, 2008 @ 12:05 AM

Very silly..Daniel Craig, zip it and stick to the script.
To the one who suggested Will Smith..please.

In case nobody noticed (Daniel Craig included), we have a black Felix Leiter. And really, the best reflection of the changing face of Britain would be an East Indian Bond. But I think something has to be said for the fluid continuation of Bond as Fleming’s character, no matter how distant the films may be (and Casino Royale was in many ways a reversion back to the series’ literary roots).

    »”Quantum of Solace”´s “Miss Fields”=Oooh! Lovely.

  15. Bond,James...Cosmos! • November 8, 2008 @ 1:46 PM

»Her name is GEMMA ARTERTON(plays “Miss fields” in the GREAT new James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace”)=Ooh!=Wonderful!

For the people who are making suggestions about a different race of Bond, be sure to remember that he is an English character. You keep on suggesting Blair Underwood and Will Smith. It would have to be a black man with an english accent and there can’t be an American faking his voice for a Bond role, that’s just wrong.

  17. Demigod • November 9, 2008 @ 7:40 AM

    Cosmos..are you on crack?

  18. Bond,James...Cosmos! • November 9, 2008 @ 11:12 AM

    »NO! 🙂 Aaah! (answer/reply to Demigod) NO!

»New 007 movie “Quantum of Solace”=another BRILLIANT Bond movie=Pure CLASS. And the Bond girls are LOVELY(Olga,Gemma=Ooh!). This is the way… 🙂

That’s what they said about The Honeymooners and look how that turned out. Was it a bad movie? Couldn’t say, never saw it and neither did anyone else.

I like Daniel Craig, however his use of the word coloured made me cringe. A publisist or his agent should make sure to sit him down and tell him coloured is not acceptable any more to describe black people. He’s not coming from a place of malicious intent so I don’t take it as such. I don’t want to see a black bond or a female bond or a dog named bond. I’m sure a writer will be inking a black secret agent novel soon enough. Remember XXX the next one can be a woman, maybe Queen Latifah or Salma Hayek. Hmmmmmm.

    »James Bond Rocks! Again!…Yes.

  23. tributegirl • November 10, 2008 @ 4:39 PM

Yeah quinn, that’s kind of how I felt, that he didn’t use the word coloured with any mean intent, but it was weird to read, wasn’t it?

  24. Iamone • November 11, 2008 @ 3:25 PM

As Jim Carrey put it in an MTV Movie award monologue: We’re all just a bunch of scared caucasians ….

  25. tributegirl • November 11, 2008 @ 6:59 PM

Right on, Iamone, you said it! Or…I guess…Jim Carrey did!

  26. paulina • November 14, 2008 @ 1:44 PM

who uses the word ‘coloured’ any more? didn’t someone in hollywood get blasted for using coloured when referring to obama? why isn’t craig getting busted for using it?
