Delivery Man Blu-ray review

Delivery Man is an American adaptation of the French Canadian hit film Starbuck, which was co-written and directed by Ken Scott. Starbuck won numerous awards, including a Genie for Best Original Screenplay and Most Popular Canadian Film at the 2011 Vancouver Film Festival. When I heard it was going to be “Americanized,” I didn’t have high hopes. But then, I didn’t realize Ken Scott was going to direct the English version as well as write the screenplay.

Thanks to Scott’s involvement, the American version is incredibly close to the original. This time around, the story of David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn), a lovable man who hasn’t quite succeeded in life, is set in New York. He’s a meat delivery truck driver, but not a good one, and the only reason he’s never been fired from his job is because he works for his dad. He has a girlfriend (Cobie Smulders) who doesn’t think he’s stable enough to be a father to her unborn baby even though he’s the biological father, and she wants nothing to do with him.

He’s also in debt to a loan shark who keeps threatening him with physical violence. But that’s not his worst problem. He finds out the sperm bank he sold sperm to when he was younger used it to impregnate hundreds of women. He discovers he’s the father of 533 children, 142 of whom have filed a lawsuit to uncover his identity.

David gets his unsuccessful lawyer friend Brett (Chris Pratt) to defend his case in court. Brett brings him an envelope filled with the names and details of the children involved in the lawsuit. Curious, David has a look inside and is intrigued by what he finds. He starts to search out these grown children. David, who plays on an amateur basketball team for fun with his brothers and father, finds out he has a son who’s a pro player and goes to one of his games. He also discovers a daughter who’s in serious trouble and a son who has cerebral palsy.

I don’t want to give away what happens, but it’s fascinating to see what David does once he gets to know some of his children (without telling them who he is) and how it changes him. The audience gets the chance to discover who David really is as the movie progresses. He may be a loser, but he’s a lovable one with a big heart and as we find out, maybe he’s not that big of a loser after all.

I saw this at an advance screening and there were several people wiping their eyes at the end. Make sure to have a tissue handy when you watch this because you will undoubtedly be touched by this heartwarming, enjoyable film.

Special extras on the Blu-ray include deleted scenes, bloopers, a featurette entitled Vince Vaughn: Off the Cuff in which Vince improvs some scenes and my favorite, a featurette called Building Family. This latter features some of the auditions of the young actors who play the children, and tells how they formed a family of sorts in real life. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Also opening this week are: Dragons: Defenders of Berk Part 1, Walking With Dinosaurs, The Wolf of Wall Street and VEEP: The Complete Second Season.
