Eddie RedmayneEddie Redmayne is up for a BAFTA award for his role in The Danish Girl.

The 34-year-old actor could be victorious two years running, after winning the Best Actor gong last year for The Theory of Everything.

But 2016 sees Eddie with some tough competition, as he is up against Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Matt Damon for The Martian, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Bryan Cranston for Trumbo.

Cate Blanchett leads the Best Actress category for the The EE British Academy Film Awards 2016 with a nomination for her role in the critically acclaimed Carol.

She will compete against Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl, as well as Brie Larson for Room, Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn, and Dame Maggie Smith for The Lady in the Van.

Alicia also features in the Supporting Actress category for Ex Machina, alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh for The Hateful Eight, Julie Walters for Brooklyn, Rooney Mara for Carol and Kate Winslet for Steve Jobs.

The Supporting Actor category sees Idris Elba nominated for Beasts of No Nation, taking on Benicio del Toro for Sicario, Christian Bale for The Big Short, Mark Ruffalo for Spotlight and Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies.

This could be the year that Sir Ridley Scott finally takes home a BAFTA as he is up for Best Director, but will have to beat Steven Spielberg for Bridge of Spies, Adam McKay for The Big Short, Todd Haynes for Carol and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu for The Revenant .

Bridge of Spies and Carol led the nominations with nine nods each, followed by The Revenant with eight.

The nominations were announced this morning by Stephen Fry and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and the ceremony itself will take place at London’s Royal Opera House on February 14.
