Fifty Shades of Grey causing boom in births

The CEO of a hospital in Windsor, Ontario is speculating that the recent spike in the city’s birth rates is all thanks to the racy novel Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s been roughly nine months since the book was released and the CEO, David Musyj, says the hospital has delivered 80 babies in just six days, which is 30 per cent more than the average week. “When this book came out, everyone said, ‘just wait it’s coming,'” said Musyj. While the idea seems a bit out there, it’s not being dismissed completely. Robin Milhausen, an associate professor of family relations and human sexuality at the University of Guelph, is saying the book could be at least partially responsible. “The material is arousing,” he says, adding, “Many women respond to the book and don’t even know it. It’s leading to more sex.” That being said, it’s hard to make any scientific conclusions about the connection between the book and birth rates without a specific analysis.
What a bunch of hog wash. It’s called self control. If you can’t handle reading a fiction book without having control of what you do with your life you probably shouldn’t read it.
I think your comment mash is rather harsh. I don’t think it mentioned in the article anywhere that more accidental babies were born it just stated more babies were born which means more people were having sex. I myself don’t think it’s a bad thing if simply reading a book can improve your sex life.

I haven’t read the whole book yet, but as far as I have read, they have used protection. It’s not the book’s book’s fault that it “potentially” increased people having sex, which then “potentially” increased the amount of babies being born. They are the ones that are supposed to be responsible enough to use protection if they are not planning for a family. As well, who said there was an increased on unplanned pregnancies?
Nancy … I agree with you. Something so simple as reading a book together can sometimes be better than watching an XXX-rated movie together. The book leaves each reader to fantasize about the words being read!

Seriously if there is a bad storm or power outage (ie:The eastern seaboard years ago for that massive black out), I remember people started to use the time and darkness to re-connect and make babies. Apparently there was a spike. so why can’t it happen with a book. My x was reading it and we tried a few things so I can see how it can lead to increase in babies. Sort of an obvious thing if you think about it with the extreme popularity of the book.
I have read 2 volumes and on the 3rd one. If people did not want babies, they’d have followed to book to a T. If that’s what works for some people, great..
I have just lost all faith in the world….. lol
So we should start blaming E.L. James for overpopulation? This is completely absurd. There are far steamier books out there than 50 Shades. She didn’t revolutionize sexuality. I’m so sick of hearing about it. It was a decent story but nothing new and the sub-conscience references were almost as annoying as seeing daily reference to her over-hyped books.
Oh and it’s called condoms people.

The book definitely has the potential to increase people’s sex life! It’s an amazing series and definitely made a lot of people open their minds up to sex! It’s amazing! I can totally see how it can make the birth rate go up because people are having more sex and experiencing more excitement and adventure! I myself love the book and has definitely made my sex life more interesting! *GO FIFTY SHADES* xxx
Best comment from @O”Neil. Nothing good or interesting about the book least of all the so called steamy sex scenes. Obviously there are a whole bunch of illiterate women who are sexually boring and uncreative, so voila that crappy book found an audience to enlighten. SMH.

Read all 3 books `twice`. Yes, it can be arousing, but to blame the increase of births to this book is silly.
I sort of feel sorry for the men out there who might have wives or girlfriends that may expect their partner to become `Christian Grey` in bed. Remember ladies, its just an imaginary story.

This is Canada, and we have a low birth rate. I’m sure that any of these spikes were from people who were already planning pregnancy.
If someone were the irresponsible sort who wouldn’t take time to plan for children, they wouldn’t need an excuse like a book.
Sorry people but I agree with the prof. I have been listening to the audio CD’s of Fifty Shades and my husband is accidently hearing it on and off to as he moves through the house. Maybe it’s our age because we are passed baby stage but we are both get more aroused than usual, if you know what I mean
Oh for crying out loud. Do you think Fifty Shades of Grey is the only “racy” book out there? I don’t believe women are getting pregnant because they read the book. Women and men who read the book probably do get “hot under the collar” but I am sure those women who delivered babies did not say: “I read the book and I want to get pregnant”. Please….

The prof is only speculating and poking a little fun! Lighten up people! If 50 floats boats and more people are enjoying their sex life together as a result, power them. No one said they were unwanted births…just that there were 30% more and they were jesting about the possible cause!
This is a comment for Sol… at least they are reading and getting their kicks, it could be a baby boom from the ones who went to the movies and watched Magic Mike a movie about strippers and then got it on… I think people are just looking for an excuse to find love in a world of recession. Just like the original baby boom… after the war! PS remember the ones today who couldn’t come home.
