The cinemas are expected to be packed with families and indie enthusiasts alike this weekend. Hitting theatres this Friday is Ron Howard’s racing film Rush, which is getting a wide release after initially opening on 5 screens in the U.S. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl, the drama explores the Formula 1 racing rivalry between James Hunt and Nicki Lauda during the 1970s. It also stars Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara, and Natalie Dormer, and marks only the second time Ron Howard has directed an independently financed film, after his debut feature Grand Theft Auto in 1977. Writer-director Joseph Gordon-Levitt‘s Don Jon will get a wide release this Friday following a successful run at festivals, including Sundance and the Toronto International Film Festival. He also stars as the titular character in the independent comedy-drama, which explores a New Jersey man’s obsession with pornography and how it impacts his relationship with the potential love of his life. Co-starring Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza, it has already been highly praised by critics, and marks Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s debut as a writer and director. Sony Pictures opens Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, the sequel to the successful 2009 adaptation. The main cast will reprise their roles, including Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Andy Samberg and Neil Patrick Harris, and will be joined by newcomer Terry Crews. The animated film follows the lead character Flint Lockwood and his friends as they leave the town of Swallow Falls that has been destroyed by the events of the first film. Fox Searchlight’s Baggage Claim also opens this Friday. It stars Paula Patton as a flight attendant who is desperate to get married, and seeks out her ex-boyfriends hoping one of them will be the answer. The romantic-comedy features an ensemble cast of Taye Diggs, Trey Songz, Adam Brody, Djimon Hounsou, and Christina Milian. Finally, opening on limited IMAX release is Metallica: Through the Never, an experimental concert-film starring Dane DeHaan that follows a roadie’s adventure during the night of a Metallica concert. ~Raj-Kabir Birk
