Gore Vidal, dead at 86

Writer and political activist Gore Vidal died in Los Angeles last night. He was 86 years old. His family made the announcement via a brief message on his Twitter and website, and his nephew Burr Steers confirmed the fact to The New York Times, explaining his passing as the result of complications stemming from pneumonia. A novelist, essayist, screenwriter and playwright, Vidal’s literary prowess was respected across nearly all mediums, and he has stood as a leading political voice for the Liberals since the 1950s. As a member of a politically-connected family, Vidal ran for Congress in New York in 1960 and the U.S. Senate in California in 1982. Though best known for his essays, Vidal was also a prominent screen and teleplay writer; the bulk of his work was for television from the 1950s to the 1970s. He also found success in the theater, and his play The Best Man – which he adapted into a film in 1964 – is currently playing on Broadway. Vidal’s trailblazing literary works include the satirical Myra Breckinridge, which earned significant controversy for its transsexual themes, as well as The City and the Pillar – one of the first novels to openly deal with homosexuality. In all, Vidal published 25 novels, a pair of memoirs and a huge number of essays. ~Devin Garabedian
