Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt, who played shape-shifting monster Beorn in last year’s hit movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, has been sentenced to five months in jail for buying 12 grams of cocaine. Persbrandt, 51, was charged alongside other 10 people in a complicated drugs case after his number was discovered on a dealer’s phone. The actor’s lawyer argued that the appearance of Persbrandt’s number in the dealer’s contacts was no proof he had been buying drugs and qualified, “If it turns out an order was made, it was another person who used his phone.” The lawyer continued by saying Persbrandt attended a party on the evening when the drugs had been bought, and he left his phone lying unattended. After the sentencing, the actor immediately appealed the ruling through his lawyer. The prosecutor said he is convinced whether the Appeals Court looks at the case or not, the verdict will remain the same, saying, “I think there is sound evidence and it was a sound investigation.” ~Alexandra Sharova
