Hotel Transylvania – the Canadian connection

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced that Adam Sandler’s new animated family comedy, Hotel Transylvania, will be a part of this year’s festival. Set in the TIFF Kids programme, the film features Sandler (or rather his voice) as Dracula, the owner of Hotel Transylvania, a five-star resort for the world’s monsters. Dracula has invited some of the more famous monsters to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ 118th birthday, but is unexpectedly visited by Jonathan (voiced by Andy Samberg), an ordinary young traveler. It’s all up to Dracula, who feels he must protect Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) from falling in love with Jonathan before things get out of hand.
The film, produced by Sony Pictures Animation Studio in California, has a considerable Canadian connection. A vast amount of the animation and lighting was completed at the Academy Award-winning Sony Pictures Imageworks (SPI), which recently expanded offices in Vancouver, British Columbia. At its peak they had 73 artists working on the film at the Vancouver office. Canadian animators did 694 of the animated shots and 241 of the lit shots.
Keep your eyes open, you might just see Adam Sandler or some of his Hotel Transylvania co-stars roaming the streets of Toronto during TIFF between September 6 and 15, 2012. Be sure to check into Hotel Transylvania when it opens across the country on September 28th.

Hooray…it is great I agree (especially for those particular folks) but it’s pretty sad that talented Canadians have to go to the US to get any respectable feature work.
Usually studios open up in Canada to enjoy our tax breaks.
I also rather don’t like US companies coming here to enjoy our tax breaks while they slave out work with atrocious overtime stints for people.
Would like to see more studios being praised and recognized for how they treat staff. I’m tired of this studio’s ideas of how long people should be working in a given day. And don’t give me any bullocks about being lucky to have this kind of work. Yes we’re lucky, but some of us have worked hard to be good. Face the fact that staring at a glowing monitor for 14 hours a day is completely bad for your health.
In most places I’ve worked, animators,designers etc are classified as in the high tech industry. High tech employees don’t receive overtime pay, so it allows studio to take advantage of people. US studio love this too I imagine.
Love my work and am appreciative of it all… but conditions and expectancies for artists are terrible in studios and I can see why most choose the contract life. Yeah there’s pressure to find work in between jobs, but at least you can sleep, get exercise, see your kids and have a life outside of work.
Anyways, all the best to those talented Canadians overseas. Hope you’re getting compensated fairly.

What? It’s pretty old news. Canadians have been the blood and guts of this industry for a long time.
THis industry kind of reminds me sometimes on how British and American Generals used to take the credit for all the Blood and guts Canadians spilled doing their work for em. Canada is #1 in Many fields…We just don’t have the cash to swagger it around. That’ll change.
