- Filming took place primarily in New York, in some well-known spots including the Brooklyn Bridge, Tower Records, Park Avenue and Washington Square Park.
- Director Francis Lawrence and his special effects team had to digitally add animals and vegetation to the empty New York streets to give it the sense of being reclaimed by nature.
- The evacuation scenes at the Brooklyn Bridge involved over 1,000 extras including 160 members of the National Guard in combat gear, various military vehicles and aircraft.
- While it appears that Will Smith is alone in a scene shot on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, there were actually hundreds of spectators behind a barricade, who erupted with applause when the scene was over.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger was in talks to star in the film in 1997. Other actors who were considered for the role were Tom Cruise and Michael Douglas.
- During the freezing New York night, Will Smith entertained extras with a rendition of his rap song “Summertime.”
- One of the stunts in the movie involves jumping a 2008 Mustang Shelby GT500 through a plate glass window. During a test run, the car was to land on a pile of boxes but the radiator was ripped out and they had to cannibalize a regular Mustang for parts.
- Vehicles used included four Department of Defense Humvees, three Stryker armored vehicles, a 110-foot cutter, a 41-foot utility boat and two 25-foot Response Boat Small craft.
