Independence Day: Resurgence director calls superhero movies ‘silly’

Roland EmmerichRoland Emmerich, whose upcoming film Independence Day: Resurgence will pit humankind against alien species, has come forward with what some may consider shocking sentiments about superhero movies.

During an interview with The Guardian, the 60-year-old director compared his own films to those in the Marvel family, highlighting what he perceives as a fundamental difference.

He said, “When you look at my movies, it’s always the regular Joe Schmo that’s the unlikely hero. A lot of Marvel movies, they show people in funny suits running around. I don’t like people in capes.”

Roland, whose past credits include White House Down, The Day After Tomorrow and Godzilla, added, “I find it silly when someone dons a superhero suit and flies. I don’t understand it.”

Citing his birthplace as a possible explanation, he said, “I grew up in Germany, that’s probably why.”

In the interview, Roland called Independence Day: Resurgence “a continuation of the story rather than a sequel” to Independence Day.

He also said, “The spaceship, the mothership, is coming down to Earth and it’s even bigger than the old one.”

Roland’s chat with The Guardian also explored the presence of LGBTQ+ characters in major action blockbusters. As an openly gay director himself, Roland said “it’s time” queer characters appeared in lead roles of big-budget action films and added that he included a gay couple in Independence Day: Resurgence.

So, audiences can expect to see gay characters represented in his film, but any hope of a caped crusader seems doubtful.

I’m not gonna say he’s right, I’m not gonna say he’s wrong.

Like HIS movies aren’t silly? What a hack.

I still can’t believe that the idiot who directed Independence Day tried to take on Stonewall. How does that even make sense?! What a moron.
At least there are gay characters in his new film.

This talentless turd has some nerve criticizing other films. His films are GARBAGE.

How in the hell does this walking skidmark get to keep making movies?! He makes Use Boll look like Stanley Kubrick.

He’s right. Superhero movies are for idiots, they always have a stupid plot and they’re ridiculous.

This guy can’t understand why superhero movies – which make millions more and have infinitely more depth in their characters and themes than his shallow, unoriginal, mindless big budget, overly action/special-effects-saturated movies – are so popular. Big mystery, eh? Oh, and this fool made that crap-fest 90s Godzilla. Enough said – shut up, Emmerich.

Catrina, you obviously haven’t bothered giving superhero movies much of a chance. If you had an open mind and tried watching a few of them, you’ve probably find them quite entertaining. Writing them all off as stupid and for idiots only betrays your own stupid short-sightedness.

I enjoyed Emmerich’s films until I realized they basically follow the same formula. Even he admits in this article, the Joe Schmo is the unlikely hero. Usually an underlying environmental plot. He’s got his formula and Marvel and DC have theirs. They’re just different niche markets. Marvel makes sequels, Emmerich makes sequels or /continuations of his story. His disaster and world destroying movies were top performers at one time and now it’s the superhero’s turn. I wonder If he’s shared this comment with Will Smith who was in Independence Day and now a DC anti-hero flick, or better yet, Jeff Goldblum who was in ID and ID:Resurgence along with being in Thor:Ragnarok. He’s knocking their movies.

After seeing Avengers: Endgame, he’s right. Endgame was a fascist, stupid, boring, wrong, Ed Wood Jr. movie for me, from beginning to end. Sorry Marvel fans, I like Marvel but I’m not going to eat everything they do. And, with all due respect, all that persons that went to cinemas to watch Endgame 1000 times are the biggest idiots of all time for me.
