Interview with Arrow star Paul Blackthorne

British actor Paul Blackthorne returned to the small screen in CW’s hit series Arrow, which is currently in its second season. Not only does this actor charm as Detective Lance, but he also made his directorial debut last fall with This American Journey. The documentary tells the story of Paul’s journey with Australian photographer Mister Basquali as they drive from New York to California. We talked to Paul to get a scoop on his character in Arrow and what it’s like being a director.
What kind of preparation did you do when you took on the role of Officer Lance?
I find that there are two sorts of aspects. One aspect which is important is the professional role that he inhabits. To me, the most fun is the psychological aspect of the character in terms of what experience made him become the person he is now. So I tend to do a lot of back stories on the person’s whole life – everything from the moment they were a kid up to the given moment in the script.
How has your character has evolved over the last season?
Well, in the first season it was a strange situation. The vigilante popped out of nowhere and started running amok in Starling City. Detective Lance, as he was then, was not happy with this guy who is running outside the system of law attempting to impose his system of justice. Hence, in the first season Lance was hell-bent on bringing this guy down. But in the season one finale, he comes to this point in his mind that this guy is doing good for this city. And the one thing that matters most to Lance is the city. He realizes outside the box that, outside the system of law, he too is able to benefit the city just like the vigilante. Even when he is demoted and experiences public humiliation, in his heart he is in a much better place. He knows that while working with the vigilante, he is getting the most positive work done for Starling city.
The relationship between Lance and the Vigilante has taken a different turn. What’s that dynamic like?
It’s not like they’re going out for dinner or anything, but in terms of what one can do for the other, they realize they can be a bit of help each other. They are ultimately trying to reach the same goal.
Tell us about taking on the director’s seat; what made you decide to direct a documentary?
It was a few years ago after the economic downturn and found myself wondering what’s going on in America. I always loved America, but wasn’t sure how I was feeling about it because of everything that had happened. The pursuit of the American dream seemed to have brought the country down to its knees — the whole idea that more consumption makes you more happy. I thought that before I form my opinion on America fully, I need to visit parts of America I don’t spend that much of time in. So I went across with an Australian friend of mine and we interviewed people in America about what they felt about it – from New York to L.A and everything in between. It was very educational.
What was the biggest challenge you faced as a director?
Getting a film made! That’s the biggest challenge for every independent production. You just do your best because of other people and their generosity and support. It’s a test of character for sure.
Does this mean you’ll spend more time directing instead of acting?
Well, obviously I’m enjoying my time on Arrow at the moment. But as some point, when we get some time off shooting between seasons, I’d like to do some directing of course—that would be nice. But in the meantime, I’m very happy to be enjoying Arrow time.
Will you consider directing more documentaries or maybe move to narrative features?
I’ve certainly got some more documentary ideas because I’m just fascinated with people. Getting out there and interviewing people who have a great story is fascinating! In narratives, those stories are reflected in a script and you can have fun with that as well. I’d love to do narratives at some point.
What are your other upcoming projects?
Well, I was fortunate to be involved in Dumb and Dumber To, which was a lot of fun. This American Journey is out now and I’ve got my hands full with Arrow.
