The Great Gatsby failed to knock Iron Man 3 out of the top spot at the box office this weekend despite a valiant effort. Iron Man 3 added an estimated $72.5 million to Disney’s ever-expanding coffers, bringing its North American total to $284.9 million and its worldwide tally to an astounding $949 million. The superhero movie has a Tribute user rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars and continued to do well despite a drop of 58 per cent from last week. The Great Gatsby, which has an average rating of 3.9 stars, exceeded expectations with $51.1 million. It gave director Baz Luhrmann his biggest movie debut yet and provided a sizable challenge to Iron Man 3. Meanwhile, Pain & Gain took third with $5 million and a Tribute user rating of 2.7 stars.
Tyler Perry Presents Peeples, which also debuted over the weekend, didn’t gain fans with Tribute users, who gave it 1 star, while at the box office it only managed $4.9 million. 42 continued to hold up well and snagged fifth spot with 4.5 stars and $4.7 million, only $0.2 million less than Perry’s new flick. Other movies in the North American box office Top 10 include: Oblivion, The Croods, The Big Wedding, Mud (which opens in limited release in Canada this Friday) and Oz The Great and Powerful. ~ Cassie Jasinski
