Although it has not yet been officially announced, an insider has revealed J.J. Abrams, who helmed both recent Star Trek movies, has apparently signed on to direct the new Star Wars movie for Disney, according to the wrap.com. This comes as a complete surprise, because last November, Abrams told Entertainment Weekly he would definitely not be directing it. However, he told Hero Complex in 2009: “As a kid, Star Wars was much more my thing than Star Trek was." Abrams runs the extremely successful production company, Bad Robot, and has created or co-created many top television series such as Lost, Alias and Fringe. On the big screen, he's helmed hits such as Super 8 and Mission: Impossible III, in addition to the Star Trek films.

He has a great grand vision, it would be interesting and now worth while watching. He's going to be labelled as the sci-fi guy.

I'm excited. The Star Trek story was weak BUT he did pay homage to the original story, characters, and Roddenberry concepts. If he carries over Lucas' original three films in this manner, skips the heavy CGI, we got ourselves a director, a movie, and nerds dressed as a badass Ewok camping out for days.

The Star Trek storyline sucked. Turned heroic Kirk into a whiny, petulant jock a-hat, and made Spock a cardboard cutout character like the stereotype anal dean at a college in a frat-house movie. Karl Urban mailed in a bad impression of deforest Kelly and the main villain had zero character development - there only to yell and glare at the camera.
