James Franco wants to sell you imaginary art

By Alexandra Heilbron on June 22, 2011 | 16 Comments

James Franco is one crazy dude. He’s collaborating with The Non-Visible Museum — a conceptual art project by Brainard and Delia Carey in which they describe imaginary pieces of art that you can buy. In a video promoting the project, Brainard describes a piece of work that’s illuminated by 900,000 LED lights. He then offers you imaginary sunglasses so you don’t get blinded by them. James Franco’s contribution is an imaginary short film, inspired by a short story by William Faulkner called Red Leaves. The website warns: “You are not buying a visible piece of art! You will not receive a painting or a film or a photograph in your mailbox…. You will receive a title card with a description of a piece of art, as well as a letter of authentication. You may mount this card on a blank wall in your home or gallery. What comes next is up to you! The artwork comes to life—and takes on full personal meaning—in your imagining and describing of it, both to yourself and to your visitors. You may also choose to sell the non-visible artwork to another collector.”

Some people have more money than brains…I dont doubt there will be some foolish people who will actually buy a card to put on their wall…lol

If this works, than I’ve got stables full of unicorns and imaginary silos full of feed made from rainbows to sell these people.

Sadly some very rich people will buy in to this. Not only for the charity, but for the prestige and the stories these cards will bring.

Got to offer deals to stay competitive. PS You will also receive a free tube of Elmer’s glue to mount on the wall, or if you prefer I’ve got some rainbow coloured push-pins, The choice is yours!! Cheers.

Really. Really? Now this looney has completely stepped out of reality. I knew after the oscars it would be one fast downhill slide. Either that or he has bought into the hype about his own importance. Such a spoiled little brat with a ridiculous ‘project’. Someone tell this little boy he’s too old to set up a lemonade stand and have adults buy sour, hot lemonade out of pity. Where is his mother??

WHAT THE….? Ok I must be in my own world, I read the article a couple times. I still don’t fully understand. Wow. Buying basically nothing. You get nothing certification? lol. There was this guy who made a mint selling people an Original authentic copper engraving of Abraham Lincoln for $X..and all he sent people was an american penny (look VERY closely to the centre pillars, it’s U.S. security measure on pennies).
    Yes people will buy anything.

I love it, that’s too funny. I love their descriptions of the art, too bad it doesn’t really exist.

This will work, just like the guy selling sections of the moon to people with an authentic certificate of ownership.

Finally I can hang my own art on the wall and know that it will be just as good as the ‘real’ stuff!!

What next are they all looney in California?

This is an excellent project! Don’t any of the people commenting here have imaginations? Sometimes our imagination far surpasses anything that can be produced, and these works hint at this. They are triggers, but you need a creative mind to work with it. Think outside the square! Open your minds! We all love to dream, and some dreams are impossible to realise in actuality, but they are still worth sharing. And this is nothing new. FLUXUS artists worked in this way 60 years ago, and conceptual art is still regarded as highly fascinating by most of us with a genuine interest in art and its potential.
