Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer to end partnership

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and The Walt Disney Co. announced Thursday that they will not renew the deal that gives Disney first look at Bruckheimer’s projects. They have collaborated on the lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure films in recent years, which together have grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. “I am very appreciative of the wonderful collaboration and support I have had at The Walt Disney Company for over twenty years and the twenty-seven movies we have made together. The good news is we will continue working together on Pirates of the Caribbean, National Treasure and other projects we have developed together at the studio,” Bruckheimer said in the statement. The split follows speculation of unrest in the relationship linked to the box office disappointment The Lone Ranger, which brought in $89 million domestically from its $250 million budget. However, Walt Disney Studio’s Chairman Alan Turin insists “this is about a long-term relationship with lots of pluses and minuses. The Lone Ranger certainly didn’t help things, but we all have our wins and our losses, and this is an overall thing related to the company’s supply of projects from all these other places.” The partnership has spanned over 20 years and 27 films, including the Michael Bay films Armageddon, The Rock and Pearl Harbor. Following their acquisition of Star Wars producer Lucasfilm in late 2012, along with the already owned Marvel Studio’s and Pixar, Disney will have their hands full for the foreseeable future. ~Raj-Kabir Birk
