It was announced today that Oscar winner Julianne Moore will be among the presenters at The Canadian Screen Awards. Fifty awards were handed out last night by The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television at the first night of The Canadian Screen Awards.
The gala, hosted by comedian Darrin Rose at the Sheraton Centre Toronto, celebrated the best in news, sports, documentary, lifestyle, reality and digital media.
In a press release, Helga Stephenson, CEO, Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television said it was a great year for the Canadian film industry. “2014 was an exceptionally competitive year for Canadian film, television & digital media,” Stephenson said,“The Academy received a record number of Canadian Screen Awards submissions, which is also a good sign for the industry.”
The nominees for Best Picture are : Cast No Shadow, Fall, In Her Place, Maps To The Stars, Mommy and Tu Dors Nicole. The nominees for best director are : Atom Egoyan, Albert Shin, David Cronenberg, Xavier Dolan and Stephane LaFleur. For best actor the nominees are: Ryan Reynolds, Bruce Greenwood, Michael Murphy, Evan Bird and Antoine Oliver Pilon. The best actress nominees are: Ahn Ji Hye, Joon Da Kyung, Julianne Moore, Anne Dorval and Julianne Cote.
CBC’s the fifth estate won a trophy for best news or information series and the best documentary program went to Our Man in Tehran. Sports broadcaster Michael Landsberg took home the Humanitarian Award.
Canadian Screen Week runs until Sunday March 1st when the two-hour final show is broadcast live on CBC at 8 p.m. The gala will be hosted by Emmy award winning comedy legend, Andrea Martin. In addition to Julianne Moore, George Stroumboulopoulos, Diego Klattenhoff and Kevin Durand will also be presenting a few awards.
