Kris Allen outselling Adam Lambert

By Alexandra Heilbron on January 14, 2010 | 100 Comments

Adam Lambert and Kris AllenEven though American Idol judge Randy Jackson recently told MTV.com that Adam Lambert has “a far bigger personality, probably, than Kris [Allen],” he went on to say, “I think they’re both equally talented.” He also added, “Kris obviously won for a reason.” It looks like Jackson knows what he’s talking about. Although Lambert looked to be more successful out of the gate, with his album “For Your Entertainment” selling almost double what Allen’s debut album sold, Allen seems to be pulling ahead — his new single Live Like We’re Dying has sold over 500,000 downloads and holds the #27 spot on the Nielsen SoundScan singles charts, while Lambert’s For Your Entertainment has only sold just over 200,000. ~Alexandra Heilbron

Why don’t you put the numbers for the album sales. Adam has sold twice as many albums 445000 to Kris 220000. Could this be why Adam hasn’t sold as many singles.

  2. Deb • January 14, 2010 @ 10:30 AM

Are you aware that Adam’s album has outsold Kris’s album two to one? (Perhaps an indication that people want all of Adam’s songs).

  3. 4watitzwurth • January 14, 2010 @ 10:48 AM

Sounds like an indication that Kris is picking up fans outside his idol fan base…I would not be surprised if his popularity continues to expand beyond that base as more people are exposed to his music via singles. Congrats Kris…on to platinum!

  4. ke • January 14, 2010 @ 12:28 PM

good. i love adam but ever since Idol he’s been way too much of everything. he was way more than i thought he was and not necessarily in a good way. but kris was always kris and always ‘kick-awesome’ and likable. i still like adam for his unbelievable talent but his songs don’t really appeal to me…maybe next album.

  5. Solo, South African Mega Fan • January 14, 2010 @ 3:36 PM

Oh, it that how you measure success?? Why is Kris’ Album not selling??? People are not interested in the whole album. His Record Contract is about selling the whole CD, not one single. He IS the worst in terms o album sales compared to previous AI winners.SuBo has sold the highest number of CDs Internationally, but less singles, does that mean that Kris is more successful and bigger than SuBo? HAHAHA…Who are you fooling? Or you are playing dumb to create controversy and generate more hits or your article?

F.Y.I. Adam’s whole CD is on the Top 20 Bestsellers list in SA, Kris is not even on the Top 1000 list.

  6. Robert Laine • January 14, 2010 @ 4:04 PM

boy, the lengths homophobes will go to make Adam Lambert look bad…Adam’s album has sold 2/1 versus Kris, so the headline is a complete and utter lie. Shoddy journalism in the extreme!! Shame on you, Alexandra your homophobia is showing!

  7. Morgan • January 14, 2010 @ 4:17 PM

Ok, so if Glammie boy doesn’t get good press, the writer is a homophobe, huh? And if AL were black, the writer would be a racist I suppose. Sad commentary on Adam’s fans.

  8. Ryang • January 14, 2010 @ 4:26 PM

Uh….yeah sure. Now that you mention it I guess Kris is the bigger star. Wow! How wrong the whole world has been.

Thanks for setting the record straight.

  9. Bruce K • January 14, 2010 @ 4:26 PM

You can try and spin it any way you want but Kris Allen is the all time worst selling idol of all times. By an Arkansas mile. His CD sales are pathetic. It took him 7 weeks to sell what Adam Lambert did in 1 week. He still has probably several more months to go to sell what David Cook did in his first week. It took him 10 weeks…count them ten weeks to go gold on his single. Something Cook did in one week. So go ahead and spin away. Kris is pathetic.

  10. Ariel • January 14, 2010 @ 4:38 PM

WHAT PLANET ARE YOU ON?!!!! Kris is NOT outselling Adam. Adam’s ALBUM has sold 490,000 copies vs. 200,000 for Kris, whose album was released about a month earlier than Adam’s. Kris single and album were out six weeks earlier than Adam’s. If people love Kris’ music so much, why aren’t they buying the album. In terms of $$$$, Adam has made far more money for RCA ($10 for album v. $1.29 for single) than Kris has for Jive.

GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT – did Kris publicist put you up to reporting lies?!!!

  11. Elizabeth • January 14, 2010 @ 4:40 PM

    @Caroline:
First of all, Kris Allen’s CD came out on 11-17-2009. Not 4 months. And honestly, Adam Lambert is not getting good publicity these days because he shoot himself on his foot because of his AMA performance. He is self destructive just like you being an Adam Lambert’s fan. Did’nt Adam Lambert ask you guys to cool it down?
Do you honestly believe that people would tolerate Adam’s behavior? Smell the coffee my dear! So you know, you need to be nice to the media people, because they have the power to make any artist successfull or down.

  12. PhoebeB • January 14, 2010 @ 4:57 PM

LOL at Randy. Who did he think he was kidding? As soon as it emerged in top five week that he knew Adam because he had provided session vocals for his Dance Troop series, he started trying to distance himself from him with lukewarm comments and he carried it on after the final. Equally talented? At what? Certainly not singing (don’t make me laugh!), definitely not performing (unless having less life than the microphone stand constitutes performing) and absolutely not at acting if Kris’s put-on shock face each week as he was voted through and when he won, as if he didn’t know what was going on, is anything to go by.

Kris won for a reason? Talk about damning with feint praise! Of course Kris won for a reason and Randy, like all involved with the show, knows the reason – Arkansas. The same reason that he has 500k downloads of that tuneless, verbal diarrhea of a song. There is evidence that the single is being downloaded countless times repeatedly to the same e-mail accounts and IPs each week and has been for the past eight weeks since it was declared a flop after two weeks of release. What a surprise …… not!

Singles sales of that number and the airplay that the single is getting should translate into a substantial rise in album sales but instead, Kris’s album sales are falling through the floor so of course the record company smelt a rat.

Downloading multiple singles is so much cheaper than multiple albums and you get more units for your money so you make a bigger impact in the numbers. The perpetrators are not stupid, are they? Or are they? You see, singles sales do not save contracts unless you are signed to a singles-only contract, because singles sales bring in quicker money but not a lot of it, and Kris’ contract is in serious danger. He may yet become the first winner to not just have their contract downgraded but to be dropped altogether. I hope that doesn’t happen but if it does, I hope it serves as a warning to any supporters of any present and future contestants who may be thinking of pulling a similar stunt.

  13. Moviefan • January 14, 2010 @ 5:00 PM

I read about this on Perez Hilton’s site too, and since he’s not a homophobe (he’s openy gay and crazy about Lambert), how would reporting on this make this writer a homophobe? It says his single is outselling Lamberts. It’s a fact, there’s nothing incorrect in the article, so why all the fuss?

  14. Sheila • January 14, 2010 @ 5:04 PM

Your article is a BIG JOKE and you are making fun of Kris, it is not fair.

BTW Randy Jackson contradicts himself, at the post finale interview with Ryan on Kiss, he said that Kris is NOT a good singer, and they were shocked when Kris won (check the interview). I wouldn’t count much on what comes out of his mouth

  15. Caroline • January 14, 2010 @ 5:07 PM

    Elizabeth
In case you haven’t realised, it is Kris’ single sales that are being discussed. Kris’ album was released on November 17 but his single was made available for download in September.

What is there to tolerate about Adam’s behaviour? You need to get with the 21st century. However, your not alone in your country where that is concerned. Funny how Adam’s AMA antics were mentioned as a positive in the media of other more enlightened countries where the story was picked up on and in the countries where Adam is being promoted this year and is being listed by music editors in those country as one to watch out for in 2010, they are being reported as a positive. Behaviour? Rock & Roll, mate! Adam was the kick into the present day and the brush with credibility that the stale and well past its sell by date pile of cheese that is American Idol needed.

  16. PhoebeB • January 14, 2010 @ 5:12 PM

@Moviefan – No one is debating that. The issue that most are picking up on with this article is that it says Kris is outselling Adam when he very blatantly isn’t. A just over 2/1 ratio for one single, added to the sales of Adam’s other singles and the circa 3/1 superiority that Adam has in album sales does not add up to Kris outselling Adam by any stretch of the imagination, unless someone is very mathematically challenged.

  17. Moviefan • January 14, 2010 @ 5:31 PM

If you read it, it says his single is outselling Adam’s. Is that true? Or not? Does the article say he’s outsold him in album sales? No. So why all the fuss for crying out loud.

  18. PhoebeB • January 14, 2010 @ 5:39 PM

@Moviefan – if you read the title it says “Kris Allen outsells Adam Lambert”.

  19. Moviefan • January 14, 2010 @ 5:40 PM

Titles are often abbreviated, and then you have to READ the article to find out the whole story.

  20. Frank • January 14, 2010 @ 5:43 PM

” he went on to say, I think theyre both equally talented. ”

When? He said Kris wasn’t a good singer. At least Simon sugar-coated it (for once) and said Kris wasn’t the best singer in the competition. Randy just out and out said Kris wasn’t a good singer.

As for Kris outselling Adam, dear me! Will you be saying he’s outsold Susan Boyle next simply because he’s sold more singles than she has too?

  21. PhoebeB • January 14, 2010 @ 5:45 PM

@Moviefan – The article doesn’t give the whole story. It doesn’t even give a substantial fraction of it.

  22. Moviefan • January 14, 2010 @ 5:51 PM

What more do you want? Every detail of their careers since AI? The title says he outsold him, when you read the article, it says that though Lambert outsold Allen in albums, that currently, Allen’s single is outselling him. End of story. In case you haven’t noticed, these stories are always brief.

  23. Tatyana • January 14, 2010 @ 6:45 PM

Why you did not mention how Adam Lambert album outsold Kris Allen album?
    Probably homophobia is the reason!!!

  24. fred • January 14, 2010 @ 7:15 PM

lol and the glamberts are already foaming at the mouth. I love Adam but it’s too bad he has such repugnant, ignorant fans.

  25. Clare • January 14, 2010 @ 7:19 PM

To be honest, if Kris as the winner didn’t manage to get a gold single after almost four months, he could kiss goodbye to his contract. Particularly given his album sales that are poor even in the current climate.

  26. mary • January 14, 2010 @ 7:21 PM

Kris is more talented as a musician and songwriter, I’m afraid. Some people actually like that in a performer. Get over it.

  27. kat • January 14, 2010 @ 7:24 PM

i don’t get what the fuss is about. the article says adam’s album sold almost double kris’, but kris’ current single is selling more than adam’s single. those are all facts. what are we debating here?

  28. Davina • January 14, 2010 @ 7:25 PM

Fred, pray tell, when did stating the facts become foaming at the mouth? Why should Adam’s fans be foaming at the mouth anyway? Who’s timetable for 2010 is already planned? Not Kris. Whose contract is under threat? Not Adam.

  29. Anne Marie • January 14, 2010 @ 7:27 PM

    Mary
Some people clearly like it so much that they won’t buy a whole album of it.

  30. Carrie • January 14, 2010 @ 7:29 PM

@Mary, perhaps then Kris can stick to playing instruments and writing for people who can actually sing and spare us the monotonous drone of his voice.

  31. mary • January 14, 2010 @ 7:29 PM

Anne Marie, that’s because the majority of people in this country have bad taste. Or do you like Justin Bieber as well?

Also, it’s very telling to me that so many of Adam’s fans tend to be mean-spirited and hateful. What does that have to say about Adam himself? Why does he attract people like you to him?

  32. Kevin • January 14, 2010 @ 7:30 PM

    Who really cares!!!???
You are talking about a fairy and a smurf. WTF!!!
    People get a life!

  33. Carrie • January 14, 2010 @ 7:30 PM

LOL @ Anne Marie. So true. I didn’t think of that.

  34. L • January 14, 2010 @ 7:34 PM

Comparing songs that came out months apart just because you want to create an Idol fan war is dumb. Kris’ song came out in September and Adam’s came out in November. If you have to make a comparison a more accurate one would be their albums which Kris’ came out one week before Adam’s.

  35. C. • January 14, 2010 @ 7:35 PM

Congratulations to Kris for going Gold with LLWD.

(And OF COURSE, the reason the author talked about LLWD is because she’s a homophobe. JFC, Glamberts go away! Why you gotta piss on our cheerios, I’ll never know.)

  36. Carrie • January 14, 2010 @ 7:37 PM

@Mary, it seems to me that many of Kris’ fans are gullible and deluded. What does that say about Kris himself? Nothing at all. I’m not going to ask what attracts the gullible and deluded to Kris because it would be impossible to be a fan of the weakest winner in talent show history any other way.

You say that some people like singer/songwriter/musicians and when you are challenged about Kris’s album sales, you contradict yourself. Some people do like singer/songwriter/musicians but they like good ones, not those with a voice that you could hear at any karaoke.

I mean if you are going to suggest that Kris is on a vocal par with Adam, you are more deluded than most.

You also accuse the majority of people in America (I’m assuming you mean America) of having bad taste after having accused other people of being mean-spirited and hateful. I hope you can see the irony.

    @Caroline
What country do you think I belong? I am from USA, lived here in Los Angeles for a long time. Yes, I am concerned about my country in the 21st Century where no one seems to values good morals. Adams lurking around in AMA is not positive note for everybody regardless what country you came from. USA is an open minded country, but Adam Lambert needs to know where to draw the line. When kids are watching, he can act normal, and in the privacy of his home, he can do whatever he wants. Certainly, Adam was the kick into the present day, but where do you think it is taking him…. down where the pile of garbage belongs. We have a lot of cheeses that creates molds when left unattended, do you really want to eat that cheese? I dont think so.

Get a grip and focus on what is good for Adam, for his sake.

  39. Laura • January 14, 2010 @ 8:09 PM

Personally I’m a bit disappointed in both of their sales to date, especially Adam’s sales. With all the promotion and press he’s received, I thought he might outsell Cook who was just about platinum by now for album sales. But no, Cook has outsold both of them combined. Guess Lambert just can’t live up to all the hype he’s been getting. Wish them both the best of luck and hopefully things will turn around.

  40. Kelly • January 14, 2010 @ 8:14 PM

Well done Kris but, seriously, this article does his cause no favors by being written with rose tinted glasses. It’s sad that not many people seem to be moved to buy his album which is what matters.

  41. SajiNoKami • January 14, 2010 @ 8:15 PM

Kris sells singles, Adam sells albums
it is kind of a weird dynamic.

it may have to do with:

Kris’ management is more pushing the single,
making sure the song gets spins and the vid is played.

Adam’s management is pushing Adam as a whole package
Not even trying to get FYE spins because DJ’s have said
straight out that they won’t play it, more like WWFM
TFM and FYE never had a chance. The timing on the vid
release of FYE was really odd with stations only doing year end
countdowns, as was TFM, because Kris, being the winner,
had to release something first. It is almost like team Adam
is going too fast? I have to admit though, because so much
is going on with Adam, I have not lost interest.

only reason i know who: Kris, Allison, Danny, and Matt
are, is because I like Adam… don’t watch AI.

  42. glambert1481 • January 14, 2010 @ 8:19 PM

Spin, Alexandra, spin! But no matter how you spin it, Kris is the worse selling idol in idol history to date. Adam’s album is about ready to turn gold. I guess people want to hear all of Adam’s music instead of a measly single. Better get your facts straight before you write an article that any average AI watcher can shoot a dozen holes through.

  43. Skylar • January 14, 2010 @ 8:25 PM

Check your facts.. With one less week Adam is outselling Kris 2-1. while Kris has sold a little over 200,000 the lowest for any American Idol Winner EVER, Adam has sold 450,000 and is almost Gold.

It is nothing to be proud of that people would rather buy 1 song than the cd. That is what is happening with Kris.

  44. kiarra13 • January 14, 2010 @ 8:26 PM

Adam’s fans are buying the whole album not just the single. Adam’s album is doing better than Kris’. Might this have anything to do with it?

  45. Gemma • January 14, 2010 @ 8:30 PM

Laura, Adam’s album sales are what the record company had in mind at this stage which surprised me. For a number of reasons but the primary one being that they obviously knew what the album would be like and that it would result in not appealing to a substantial part of his Idol following (which judging by posts around the net, etc, appears to have borne out). They were willing to ride that however because America is no bigger a priority for them where Adam is concerned than most other countries. The album was given an “international” feel rather than an “American” feel for a reason. If anything Kris’ album is more “American” but I’m not really surprised by his low album sales. Equally I am not surprised by the sales of this single.

The media attention is nothing to do with the record company (who spend most of their time honoring the behind the scenes promotion that they are contractually obliged to give the winner) but to do with the management company and the fact that the media is interested and will continue to be so as long as Adam continues to do for shows, etc, what he did for Leno for example when he appeared and they got over 1 million more viewers that night.

  46. kathy • January 14, 2010 @ 8:30 PM

Adam’s CD has sold over twice as many as Kris’. Why play dumb and try to make it look like Kris was more popular. He isn’t. He has only sold a bit more than 200,000 copies of his cd. Adam has sold almost 450,000. more than double. Could it be people want all of Adam’s songs but only wanted the 1 Kris song? hmmm Now who is really more popular? I like both guys but Adam is definitely doing a whole lot better than Kris.

  47. Frank • January 14, 2010 @ 8:31 PM

Can some people please stop being so mean? About both these guys. The article may not be accurate but neither of them wrote it.

  48. karen • January 14, 2010 @ 8:31 PM

@kat The problem lies in the headline that got everyone here in the first place. It is misleading. It should have read “Kris Allen’s SINGLE currently outselling Adam Lambert’s” and there would not have been all this fuss. The headline implied that Kris was outselling Adam….which is not really true as so many have pointed out. In all other areas…album or combined cd’s Adam is out selling Kris by far. Also the fact that the article does not mention release dates when making a comparison of sales of a single released in September to one released 2 months later is also misleading. Without this pertinent information the entire article, not just the headline, also becomes misleading. So what we have here is a headline that is misleading followed by an article that is misleading. The writer should have done her homework to make the article more accurate and representative of the true facts. At this point it is like comparing apples and oranges. On the other hand, she did accomplish her purpose….she did get hits and comments!

  49. Annie • January 14, 2010 @ 8:33 PM

Look I’m a true glambert (2173) and adore Adam to pieces but seriously chill out! Kris IS outselling Adam in singles. No one said anything about Kris outselling Adam’s album. That would be a downright lie. The writer simply was comparing the single sales, that does not make her a homophobe. It’s just a fact. Kris’s single went gold, Adam’s didn’t. End of story. The writer SAID Adam’s album was outselling Kris’s 2/1. And there is no need to bash Kris when biting an innocent person’s head off about lying (which they didn’t). Let the Kris fans comment about Kris and Adam fans comment about Adam. Just let there be peace.

  50. Laura • January 14, 2010 @ 8:37 PM

Gemma, I appreciate your intelligent reply to my comment, however, I did not say that his mgmt was responsible for any media coverage — I only said “promotion and press”. Also, it’s good to know that you have an inside with his mgmt. company and that this is exactly where they wanted him to be. So if he was multiplatinum by now, they would not be happy?!!

  51. Jo-Anne • January 14, 2010 @ 9:15 PM

p.s. PhoebeB, “tuneless, verbal diarrhea of a song.” love it…and totally agree…

  52. Marly • January 14, 2010 @ 9:20 PM

The issue here is the spin the author choose to make in the headline and body of the article, which demonstrates her bias. To say nothing of her poor journalism skills at essentially ripping this off of Perez Hilton’s website.

Adam has sold twice as many albums as Kris. Therefore the article headline could have been, “Adam Lambert outselling Kris Allen.”

Or the headline could have been, “Kris Allen outselling Adam Lambert on the singles chart” — which is an accurate statement. Instead the so-called author chose to create an impression that Kris is outselling Adam overall — because, c’mon, people, that is exactly what the average reader would believe based upon that headline.

  53. Undeiable • January 14, 2010 @ 9:40 PM

Pulls up soft leather recliner… popcorn check, ice tea check…..referee’s whistle check….
    Carry On!

PS These people get paid to make up headlines, and cause a stir…or they are out of a job. As Adam Lambert likes to say “It’s not that deep” 😉

  54. Fluffy • January 14, 2010 @ 9:59 PM

Whould anyone bother to write an article titled ‘Kris Allen currently outselling Susan Boyle” because Kris’s single is outselling SuBo’s on itunes?

  55. L • January 14, 2010 @ 10:00 PM

@ Laura- the reason that Gemma says that is because they have people from his mgmt as moderators on his official website and said a while back they expected him to be at 450,000 by the end of January. So they’re happy.

@ Marly- I agree with you. But even changing the headline wouldn’t make it better because I don’t see the point of comparing songs that were released in different months. And their Idol season ended last May no need to make a fan war article. But yes making up headlines is nothing new.

  56. Susan • January 14, 2010 @ 10:23 PM

I’m not really into American Idol or the Kris/Adam thing, but hasn’t Adam sold a lot more albums than Kris? Adam’s album contains how many songs – 12, 14? So if Adam sells thousands of albums more than Kris, isn’t he selling a lot more songs than Kris? And Adam’s single Whattaya Want from Me is on his album, so if you add up the single sales and album sales, isn’t Adam selling more than Kris? Seems like simple math to me. Adam is selling more songs than Kris.

  57. Nancy • January 14, 2010 @ 11:43 PM

In my opinion (the key words, haha), when people listen to just one song and then buy/download it, it means they liked the song which is why they purchased it to begin with. Whereas when you buy a cd, you usually only like 2 or 3 songs on it and the rest are just pfft, whatever. Most people who only like 2 or 3 songs on a disc will not purchase another disc by that artist. Personally, I wouldn’t buy the music of either Kris or Adam. I think they both suck…one a little more than the other, hahahaha.

  58. Mel • January 14, 2010 @ 11:48 PM

Maybe Kris did better in single sales for that one song. But Adam has sold double the amount of albums Kris had. So in reality Adam is outselling Kris.

  59. Kim • January 14, 2010 @ 11:56 PM

Wow, Adam fans are really nasty! I’m an Adam fan, I’ve only downloaded his songs, not Kris’s, but maybe I should rethink that, I don’t want to be grouped with creeps like these. The funny thing is, I don’t think they even read the article. And btw, this information is all over the web, I read it at USA Today’s site, not Perez Hilton so how is this a rip off of a Perez story? Maybe he ripped it off from USA Today or any of the 100s of websites that write about celebrities and music. It’s a story, it’s out there, it’s factual, why don’t you all just lay off, you’re making yourselves look bad.

  60. Ariel • January 15, 2010 @ 12:01 AM

@Kim – the reason people can’t leave it alone is because the title is too general and if the article isn’t read leaves whomever sees it with the impression that Kris has had more success OVERALL than Adam. Even though the article makes that differentiation, a lot people never go past the headline and then will repeat to whomever this ‘fact.’

Not sure where you are getting the impression Adam fans are nasty stating facts.

  61. Nancy • January 15, 2010 @ 12:08 AM

Ariel: Get used to it! That’s how headlines work these days! Go through the archives, check them out. The purpose is to draw interest and attention to the article to make people want to read it and guess what? It works! That’s gossip. If you want news, it’s on at 6 and 11.

I think when Tribute sees how many comments this article has gotten, and how much controversy it’s stirred up, Alexandra will get a raise. LOL! You’re right Nancy, it totally works, and if you guys that commented here don’t like an article, the best way to show it is to not comment on it, that’s what hurts writers/websites the most. Alexandra and Tribute are probably having a good laugh! Kudos!

  64. Carole Geile • January 15, 2010 @ 12:55 AM

Adam definitley should have won idol!!!! Even Kris was totally shocked when they announced him as the winner. If you remember correctly, Kris even said that Adam should have won right after his name was called. Kris seems like a very nice, genuine, down to earth guy but let’s be honest here….vocally he’s not even in the same league as Adam! It almost seems like he’s straining his vocal cords to hit the high notes. I would lay money on it that with the release of Adam’s “Whataya Want From Me” video tomorrow…his FYE album will go is gonna go GOLD! Adam….you worked so hard for this so like Paula said “take it all in”!!!!

Well once again the “Glamberts” try to keep the fanwars going. There is NOTHING in the article that is inaccurate. Kris IS outselling Adam in singles and Adam IS outselling Kris in albums. Funny how you say “everybody” wants to buy Adam’s album but not Kris’s because they like 2 or 3 of the songs on it. Well Kris hasn’t released 2 or 3 songs yet(like Adam has). Maybe when he does, people will want to listen and buy his.

By the way FYE the single flopped. Why do you think they released another single so soon.

  66. blueberry • January 15, 2010 @ 1:33 AM

Yes, we glamberts must spam every Adam related article in the internet. We have to fight all homophobes who disagree that Adam is rock god,and the best singer in history of music. He is working very hard and has more singles than Kris. In fact, WWFM is his third single. He might get another single out soon and then he will beat that Kris guy. Who is he anyway?

  67. Shelly • January 15, 2010 @ 4:03 AM

Adam has sold more albums, but in it’s first week of release his album was on sale for $3.99 at Amazon.com. He also offered a $2 off coupon on his Twitter site. Most music analysts have confirmed that the first week of album sales was inflated due to the fact that his album could be purchased for $2. Adam also shares very little writting credit for the songs on his album. Kris shares the writing credit for the majority of songs on his album. These writing credits result in greater music royalties for the music artist. As such, per the numbers, Kris has produced a greater profit for his record label and his net worth is greater than Adam Lambert’s.

For the person that is arguing that Adam is more successful because he has more singles…the quick release of singles is actually a sign of desperation for a record label. It’s better to put a single out and have it remain on the charts for a long time. Most artists releast 3-4 singles from an album. The plan is to do this slowly over a long period of time (around 6-9 months). It is not a good sign to release 3 singles in a 2 month period and have all of them fall of the charts.

Sorry Glitter Cows, but Adam Lambert is tanking. He has no sustainability. It’s fine that he is gay. There is nothing wrong with that. But for the same reason he is not interested in girls, most girls are not interested in him. The numbers speak for themselves. Once you decide to stop suspending your disbelief, you will find that you have no chance in hell with Adam Lambert and stop buying his album.

I mean, look at the video for whataya want from me. They show him having a fight with someone who packs and runs off. They don’t even show a real person, just a hand packing a bag. What a joke!!! I thought he wasn’t afraid to show who he is?

In my opinion, $2 is too much to pay for this mediocre album.

  68. Art123 • January 15, 2010 @ 8:41 AM

The “Adam Antics” was nothing more than a publicity stunt to sell cd’s….it worked. Kris’ single is outplaying Adam’s on the radio. Also…in case you are not aware…Amazon had a deal with Adam’s camp to sell his cd for $3.99 and again for $.99. Google it please. One last thing…Kris has writing credits for 11 songs on his album…so he will probably make more $$$ than Adam Lambert.

  69. ap • January 15, 2010 @ 10:44 AM

Will every one just shut up about this ‘homophobe’ crap. Just because you don’t like someone who happens to be gay does not make you a ‘homophobe’! So every one who doesn’t like Chris is a ‘heterophobe’? We all have a right to like or dislike whom we want. I personally think Adam is a better actor (for shock value) than a singer. But I’m not all that fond of Chris either. So what is the big deal here? The headline? Grow up already and realize that not everything is black and white!!!

  70. Mimi Toronto • January 15, 2010 @ 11:22 AM

This website is very interesting for a couple of reasons. People get so wrapped up and become so overenthusiastic in defending or attacking Chris or Adam that all objectivity is lost.
    But hey…it’s a good outlet, I suppose. 😉
Personally I would encourage people to not be so worried about the gender preference of these artists, that has nothing to do with what they produce for their fans. Chris is mellow and will appeal to a completely different sector of the population, while Adam is high energy and therefore attracts those that are like minded.
There is no need to belittle them or their fans. We can all coexist and be happy with our choices.
Calm down everybody, life is short, enjoy it. I am pretty sure that both Adam and Chris are having a blast, and are still friends.

  71. Marilyne • January 15, 2010 @ 11:39 AM

Adam is over the top and Kris is the “boy next door” frankly I like the “boy next door” better. I’m not saying Adam is not a good singer, but I think his fame will be short lived!!!!

  72. jjones • January 15, 2010 @ 11:40 AM

Wow, this is sounding like a “My Dad is better than your Dad” script.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and just because the headline is misleading doesn’t mean the facts are wrong.

Lighten up everyone and just support your Fav. It’s all good. 🙂

  73. fstone • January 15, 2010 @ 11:54 AM

AS far as my husband and i are concerned, Adam’s loss on american idol last season has actually ruined the show. We know now that noone will EVER be as good as Adam. Chris did not even stand a close second. Adams way of life killed his win and that is a SHAME. Noone will ever again be as good as Adam Lambert

  74. M • January 15, 2010 @ 12:05 PM

Adam is horrible, so much so it feels like my ears are going to bleed. He tries WAY to hard and nothing good comes of it…EVER. I will say though that I have yet to listen to Kris though so I can’t do any type of comparison to each other. I do not EVER watch a season of AI, i simply watch the auditions and people making fools of themselves trying to sing. To be honest with you…AI is kind of like Survivor in that it should have ended about 100 seasons ago, cause that is what it feels like it is up to now.

  75. Nancy • January 15, 2010 @ 12:09 PM

Carrie Underwood was and still is, better than Adam…in auditions, during AI, after AI, singles, cd’s (take your pick of hers). Adam will never top Carrie.

  76. M • January 15, 2010 @ 12:16 PM

    agreed

  77. Fallon • January 15, 2010 @ 12:21 PM

As far as the Adam Lambert/Kris Allen comparison goes… It just sounds like the powers-that-be, or whoever has a vested interest in Kris Allen, is trying to drum up new business for Kris Allen.

It’s an old tactic used by many. Get the people curious enough to want to go out and buy the CD, just because they post some info that isn’t quite the whole truth. One single outselling another single is not exactly ‘outselling’ anything.

Like the old, “See the #1 comedy/western of the year”. Get where I’m going with this?

  78. Isabella • January 15, 2010 @ 3:57 PM

    I can’t believe I spent 10 minutes reading this – I got hooked – remember Haiti???

  79. 4watitzwurth • January 16, 2010 @ 6:26 AM

I think Kris’s CD sales will grow steadily as more people outside the Idol audience are exposed to his singles. The CD is a great listen from beginning to end (even without the best song, “From the Ashes”). Getting radio traction is key to survival in the music industry, and it looks like that is happening for Kris, slowly but steadily, just like his rise to the top on American Idol.

No one is saying that he is outselling Adam. And what if he does? It will not cause a riff in the time-space continuum. Everyone in the known universe has been made aware that Adam sold many more CDs than Kris in his first week. It’s old news, and that’s why it’s not in the article.

However, if Adam can’t sell singles, that and the 88% drop his CD suffered in its second week support the theory that his big first week may have been due to disgruntled fans needing valdiation (or vindication) who bought multiple copies (like the woman who bought 1000 downloads of his video). The rabid fans who try to force Adam on everyone may prove to be his undoing. People like to make up their own minds about the music they listen to.

  80. M • January 16, 2010 @ 1:03 PM

yikes @ Adam’s new album cover…it looks like a woman who didn’t know the 80s were over :\ (and before all you Adam fans jump down my throat about being a homophobe…i’m far from it) I wouldn’t buy the album (if i actually enjoyed his music) simply for the ridiculous album cover….

  81. Amy • January 16, 2010 @ 3:38 PM

Adam sell more albums, because his wealthy old cougar fans buy them by the dozen. They bragged all over the web, that everyone on their Christmas gift list was getting an Adam CD.

Kris’ singles are REAL sales, not inflated multiples, made by delusional, love struck old ladies.

  82. Nessa • January 16, 2010 @ 8:40 PM

Amy, I’m the same age as Adam Lambert which is 27 years old and I love Adam Lambert. Personally, this pissing contest between the fans is rediculous. Kris and Adam are completely different and you can’t compare. That’s the unfortunate part about American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, the final two are usually two completely different people. I think Kris Allen and Adam Lambert fans should try to get along since it’s obviously NOT a competition between Kris and Adam. The music industry is what it is. Get over it.

  83. Jo-Anne • January 16, 2010 @ 9:28 PM

the “pissing contest” may be ridiculous, Nessa but look at the results…has generated more interest than anything else this week on here…and that’s what it’s all about, getting people to respond…

p.s. fstone, agree…I think America really got it wrong last year and countless other years but will still watch it this year after the final 12 or whatever are choosen, it will be interesting to see if this year’s ratings drop…

  84. Megan • January 17, 2010 @ 2:18 PM

I don’t see how ‘America got it wrong’ when Adam has had 2 singles to flop, and a third one circling the drain. If this guy really had a the fan base everyone thinks he has, this just would not happen.

I think this shows his promoters got it wrong…you just can’t start at the top in this business, no matter how much media hype you got on American Idol. Soon they will figure out Adam’s CD (first week) sales came from his sparkle cow fans using their HRT allowance to buy multiple copies.

  85. Janice • January 17, 2010 @ 10:40 PM

I just read a blog as to why Adam sold more albums than Kris – apparently Amazon.com offered a special for $3.99 with a coupon for $3.00 off – this was not offered for Kris Allen’s debut album. Both are talented individuals and their fans are going to be from obviously opposite areas of appreciation. I wish them both the very Best. I do favor Kris Allen as a fan though.
    Janice

  86. emer • January 18, 2010 @ 4:08 AM

no doubt that Adam is a star and he sings. He is really a performer.Kris Allan his voice is just a usual. Can you remember his face when the winner of the AI 2009 was declared.

  87. Angela • January 19, 2010 @ 12:06 PM

BTW, I don’t think the writer is a homophobe, or someone who doesn’t like Adam because otherwise she wouldn’t have written these articles: http://www.tribute.ca/news/index.php/adam-lambert-a-clear-winner-on-ebay/2009/05/15/

    http://www.tribute.ca/news/index.php/adam-lamberts-debut-album-at-no-1/2009/09/30/

  88. Lois • January 25, 2010 @ 9:19 PM

Kris Allens single was released on Sept. 25, 2009. Adam Lamberts release date was Nov. 23, 2009. For Your Entertainment wasn’t even promoted after the AMA’s. I believe Adam wanted to distance himself from that because it generated some negative publicity. He performed on CBS “whataya want from me” after being canceled for his AMA performance. He has been promoting that song ever since on everything, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, So You Think You Can Dance finale and even Oprah and The View. That song has moved up on the billboards and hasn’t been played that long. Kris Allen had at least a two month advantage over Adam. The $3.99 cd was a promotion after the AMA’s for just one day. I think Kris should start to throw another song our way also.

  89. steve • January 26, 2010 @ 12:51 PM

Who cares who sold more. doesnt even matter. Homophobe or not.

    GO COLTS!!!!!

  90. Briana • January 26, 2010 @ 2:40 PM

Way to go Adam!! Congrats on going gold on your CD in two countries!! Congrats on going gold on your single in one country Kris!!

  91. Briana • January 26, 2010 @ 2:41 PM

Adam I guess people prefer the whole enchilada rather just one song Congrats!!

  92. shan • January 28, 2010 @ 3:04 AM

First, I am sick and tired of reading about all of you Kris haters and bashers, claiming that he can’t sing and should never have won AI. I think that you people are RUDE and IGNORANT and need a reality check on life! Kris is an amazing and talented young man who can SING and Write and he Plays numerous instruments. Kris is our American Idol because the majority prefer his pure and wholesome style compared to the new wave of Ga Ga
and Goo Goo over the top types and criminal rap crap musicans.

Of course Adam is talented and he and Kris are close friends but Adam is an entertainer who doesn’t seem to care about setting an example to others, especially our young people. His stunt on the AMA was downright disgusting and an embarrasment to even many of his fans! For those of you who thought it was “fresh and now” and loved it…good for you…you still live in a free country and the choice is yours….with consequences of course!

The life and behaviors that we live here on earth will reflect our life in eternity whether it is Heaven or Hell…your choice? Seriously, I don’t beleive that Adam’s stage expression of free love and perverted sexual acts are hot ticket items in Heaven? Oh yes…sex does sell so maybe Adam’s bumps and grinds boosted record sells….but wow…what a way to pimp your goods.

Kris’s CD sales are climbing. His LLWD single went GOLD and his video is #1 on VH1! Oh yes…Kris has always been true to himself…no lude or pimping behavior…it is just not his style.

Kris has also continued to outsell Adam on itunes and digital downloads… AND…times are a changing folks when it comes to buying records today compared to just a few years ago…I mean who actually goes out and buys a CD these days when you can easily download songs (for less money)on itunes or for free? Yes, you are right…the CD buyers include the middle age Glambert fan types, other older types with a chunk of change and without an MP3 player, and even some young types who have money to burn for burning CDs.

Kris fans are constantly growing and rising up everywhere! Kris…congrats and go forth and prove the bashers wrong….God Bless you Kris! You will have enourmous and honest success and your beacon of hope and faith will continue to inspire and bless many many people!

  93. Siobhan • January 31, 2010 @ 8:58 AM

Adam has sold even more downloads and CDs since his Oprah Winfrey Show appearance. The single WWFM is currently the #1 video on VH1 Top 20 for the week, leaping 10 spots from the week earlier. Not to forget Adam is about to do his first concert in Florida, and people from all over the country travel to purchase tickets, which by the time I finish writing this, will be sold out. Adam has gained new fans since his Oprah Show appearance. Adam’s site, AdamOfficial had new people join the day and the day after the Oprah Show interview and performance. Adam had already a strong and dedicated fan base, but now he is gaining more fans. Many people prejudged Adam, based on his orientation, and then couldn’t handle Adam’s 2009 AMA performance. IMO, if you abandoned Adam because he told the world he was gay, and you did not understand Adam’s AMA’s performance, then you weren’t a real Adam Lambert fan to begin with. 1500 complaints to the FCC, many of which had misspellings and grammatical errors, out of the millions of viewers who watched the show and saw Adam’s performance as what it was intended to be: entertainment. People in the UK saw the AMAs a week after it aired in the US, heard about the uproar, watched Adam’s performance, and then went flooded message boards about ABC banning Adam from being on various ABC shows. Most thought s Americans needed to get over Adam’s AMA performance, and saw nothing wrong with, and stated Americans were too uptight. I have to agree, and I’m American. Adam’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show showed Adam to be insightful, authentic, and personable. His performance of WWFM won him new fans

Yes, Adam’a FYE was sold for less than $4.00 the day of it’s release, but Rihanna’s Rated R was also on sale, so has Lady GaGa’s Fame Monster. FYE went to $10 the day after it’s release. Every week Amazon has a selection of mp3 downloads, 50 from several genres of music, and sells them for $5.00. Even Ke$ha’s Animal was sold on iTunes and Amazon for $6.99 the day the CD was released
Adam’s FYE was also pre-ordered by thousands of people ahead of new releases for Barbra Streisand and Madonna on Amazon.

  94. Siobhan • January 31, 2010 @ 9:10 AM

Correction: Adam’s concert will be in Fantasy Springs in California on February 27, 2010, not Florida.

  95. Nancy • January 31, 2010 @ 5:56 PM

WWFM sucks! The song and the video.

  96. yul • May 11, 2012 @ 10:39 AM

    AL- 490,000 albums sold
    KA- 200,000 albums sold

huge difference. Adam overthrown Kris’s album.

  97. Maggie • August 27, 2012 @ 2:30 PM

For all of you that said that Adam Lambert’s fame would be short-lived, think about this.

His album, “For Your Entertainment” just recently surpassed 2 million albums sold.

His Glam Nation Tour was a worldwide success, most shows sold out.

His album “Trespassing” was #1 on the week of his release, and his songs have done handsomely on different charts around the world. Most of the reviews for “Trespassing” were positive.

His 6 concerts with Queen were a gigantic success and have gotten overwhelming praise!

Fame short lived? I hope you will have swallowed your words by now. It’s been 3 years since Adam Lambert has started his journey, and it seems like he just got started because there are many amazing things awaiting for him in the future. I think you said all those things in an effort to defend Kris Allen, but in the end all of it backfired because all the naysayers in this comment thread were proven dead wrong. I can’t help but wonder what you have to say for yourselves 2 years after writing all this sheer nonsense.

  98. Erika Da Valos • March 24, 2013 @ 11:21 AM

Who ever wrote this stupid piece could utilize his time better by doing some research before trying to create controversy. Your Idol Kris Allen socks!

  99. Erika Da Valos • March 24, 2013 @ 11:23 AM

You are provably part of his family members trying to promote him and his bad music.

  100. willisgulley • June 18, 2014 @ 8:35 PM

people get over it kris won fair and squre adam lost and that’s it. way to go kris I think your singing is great and your good lookd don’t hurt maters either.
