leonardo-dicaprioCaptain Planet and his quartet of pollution-fighting Planeteers are ready to hit the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Studios and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way Productions are teaming up for the rights to the ’90s cartoon series. They are also in talks to recruit Above the Line screenwriter Jono Matt and Scream Queens star Glen Powell to pen the live-action flick’s script.

If the rights come through, Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Leonardo are set to produce via Appian Way, which, along with Powell, signed a first-look deal with Paramount in March.

Captain Planet and the Planeteers was a TV series that ran from September 1990 to December 1992 on TBS, and followed a group of five teenagers from around the world who were gifted magical rings that could control the elements. Together, these kids had the power to summon Captain Planet, a superhero who fought against ecological evil.

The project is befitting The Revenant star, who has long been a vocal environmental activist, raising awareness on issues such as global warming via his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF).

Sony was previously set to develop its own Captain Planet film; however, the rights eventually lapsed. THR‘s sources say Paramount’s version will be very different, with Matt and Powell’s story reportedly taking place years after the events of the show, and Captain Planet is now a washed-up has-been who’s forced to rely on the Planeteers. ~Shelby Morton

This is clearly a project of love and not one he wishes to actually make money off. So a studio will have to be willing to just make it and not want to make a profit.
