The new thriller Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, exceeded box office expectations, taking in an estimated $60.4 million in ticket sales (all figures $U.S.) and earning a Tribute Viewer Rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars. This was the biggest opening ever for a film starring DiCaprio — his film Titanic, which became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, earned $28 million in its first weekend at the box office. Last weekend’s No. 1 movie, Despicable Me (Tribute Viewer Rating: 4.3), dropped one spot to second place, earning an additional 32.7 million, surpassing $118 million in two weeks. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which opened Wednesday, took in $17.4 million over the weekend for a total take of $24.5 million. Tribute viewers rated it 4 stars. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse dropped to fourth, earning an additional $13.5 million for a domestic total of $265 million. Tribute viewers rated it 4 out of 5 stars. Toy Story 3 (Tribute Viewer Rating: 4.4) rounded out the top five, earning an additional $11.5 million. At the Canadian box office, the results were the same movies in the same order as listed above.
