Lion King success leads to more animated 3D classics

On the heels of the phenomenal success of The Lion King 3D — which has crossed the $80 million mark at the domestic box office in less than three weeks — Walt Disney has announced it will release four more of its classic animated films in 3D to theaters. The following titles from Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios will be released in 2012 and 2013 — Beauty and the Beast – January 13, 2012; Disney•Pixar’s Finding Nemo – September 14, 2012; Disney•Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. – January 18, 2013 (Monsters University, a prequel to the original film, arrives in theaters in Disney Digital 3D on June 21, 2013) and The Little Mermaid – September 13, 2013. “Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” said Walt Disney Studios President Alan Bergman. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D – and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”

3D has nothing to do with these movies doing so well. They are classic Disney movies. Parents are bringing their kids to watch the movies they watched in theatres (or just as a kid at home). If anything the 3D hurts them, so many kids hate wearing the glasses. The 2D shows draw a bigger crowd, 3D is the same movie to the kids, but it’s higher ticket prices for the parents.

As soon as I read the title of the article I knew I was going to comment on it. I agree with Movie Manager. They could re-release those movies and find the same success. I, as a Disney fan, I’m happy to see them in the big screen again.
3D is actually annoying for me. I do not think the difference is that much to justify wearing the glasses for two hours and paying the extra $3. It’s even worse with some movies that are released only in 3D, without offering the choice.
I guess they will have to wait until 2012 and 2013 to realize that.

I think they should re release all of the old classics at the theatres. It’s great to get to see them again with your kids or anyone who didn’t get the chance to see them on the big screen originally. I agree though. They don’t have to be in 3D to enjoy them. The effects in the Lion King were pretty good but you should have the choice so you’re not forced into paying the extra money. It adds up for a family of four!! I would love to see Aladdin, Mulan and Hunch Back of Notre Dame!!

When The Lion King came out, the Cineplex theater in my city had a 2d showing on Saturdays and Sundays, so I saw it then. I reckon they’ll do the same for the other movies. Really excited to see these again in theaters! (Not Little Mermaid, though)
