Mariska Hargitay takes on producer role

Mariska Hargitay, who plays Olivia Benson on the hit NBC show Law and Order: SVU, will be producing Shelved, which looks at the backlog of rape kits. Mariska founded Joyful Heart Foundation, which helps survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse. The organization will serve as the social action partner, counsel and beneficiary of the film. Production began this week in Detroit, where the foundation has spent the last three years working alongside prosecutors, police and community advocates to fix the city’s rape kit backlog of 11,000 untested kits. So far, 1600 kits tested have resulted in identifying 87 serial rapists and crimes in 19 states. Detroit serves as the main setting for the documentary but will also explore backlogs in other cities and states across the United States. ~Tarah Bleier
