During a midnight showing this morning of The Dark Knight Rises in the Denver, Colorado suburb of Aurora, 12 people were killed when a gunman, wearing a bulletproof vest and a gas mask, burst through the front doors of the theater at 12:39 a.m. It occurred during a shooting scene in the film and some customers thought maybe it was part of the show. He first threw a tear gas canister into the auditorium, then began firing. Fifty others, including a three-month-old baby and a six-year-old girl, were wounded. Witness Jennifer Seeger told TODAY: "Everyone's going for the door and then everyone starts saying, 'no, he's going to shoot people going for the door,' and he did," she recalled. "They're trying to escape, and he shot those people as well." James Holmes, 24, was taken into custody in the parking lot of the theater. Hours later, police cautiously went through his apartment, which was believed to have explosives inside.
