Michael Bay apologizes for Armageddon

Michael BayDirector Michael Bay, notorious for his energetic, fast-cut editing style, apologized 15 years later for the way his 1998 blockbuster film Armageddon ended.

During an interview with the Miami Herald while promoting his new movie Pain & Gain, he took the opportunity to say, “I will apologize for Armageddon, because we had to do the whole movie in 16 weeks. It was a massive undertaking. That was not fair to the movie. I would redo the entire third act if I could. But the studio literally took the movie away from us. It was terrible. My visual effects supervisor had a nervous breakdown, so I had to be in charge of that. I called James Cameron and asked ‘What do you do when you’re doing all the effects yourself?’ But the movie did fine.”

Armageddon, about a NASA team who tries to stop a Texas-sized asteroid from colliding into Earth, was considered a disaster by many movie critics, but was given two-thumbs up by many moviegoers. According to Box Office Mojo, it grossed $535 million worldwide while a similar movie, Deep Impact – which hit theaters before Armageddon – only earned $349 million. ~E. Guevarra

I think he should apologize for the transformers franchise instead.

Yes he should be apologizing for Transformers instead.

I don’t see why he should apologize for “Armageddon” it’s an entertaining movie. He should apologize for both Transformers sequel.

he did all the effects himself…uh huh ya right. That movie put him on the map, don’t apologise now. Nothing has been much better since.

Exactly… personally, I thought Armageddon was entertaining, but I can’t say the same about transformers. That franchise has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). It’s all over the place and it’s too damn busy. Would it hurt Bay to take a few bucks away from the special effects department and pass it onto the scriptwriters?

Ceaseless explosions, plots with more holes then swiss cheese, editing done with a blender,he tends to be more like Uwe Boll with a big budget. He should apologize for much of his career.
Pain and Gain might be his first decent effort at a good movie…then again,he could still live up to my low expections.

Bay wrote on his site to clarify the statements he made to the Miami Herald, saying: “One press writer has gone too far in reporting false information. He has printed the bare minimum of my statement which in effect have twisted my words and meaning. I”™m not in the slightest going to apologize for the third movie in my movie career, a film called Armageddon. On the red carpet for Pain & Gain some reporters asked me what are you apologizing for, and I said what on earth are you talking about?

“What I clearly said to the reporter, is I wish I had more time to edit the film, specifically the third act. He asked me in effect what would you change if you could in your movies if you could go back. I said, I wish we had a few more weeks in the edit room on Armageddon. And still today Armageddon, is still one of the most shown movies on cable TV. And yes, I”™m proud of the movie. Enough said. Michael”

I love Armageddon!!! It’s one of the top 3 movies my Dad and I would watch every year together, since I was a little girl!!!

No plot, cast, or script changes could make the movie better. To me, it’s perfect 🙂

I think he did a great job with the movie ; great start to finish … in only 16 weeks??!?!?

That deserves a round of applause… some movies are “in production” for years … and no were near as good.

Hats off to you Michael Bay – keep making entertaining movies and make the critics crazy.

The reporter who interviewed him took it all out of context. It was his 3rd movie in his career and he said ‘why should I apologize…I only apologize for the 3rd act’ which was rushed. He is proud of the film no doubt.

Everyone who’s worked with him keeps saying he’s a jerk. He certainly sounds like one, taking back the so-called apology.
