MuchMusic Video Award winners 2013

Fans gathered in downtown Toronto last night to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars at the 2013 annual MuchMusic Video Awards. While the MMVAs have become well known for their outlandish red carpet arrivals, last night was less of a standout than in recent memory. (Marianas Trench did, however, arrive fully dressed in mermen attire.)

K-Pop sensation Psy was in the house to co-host, and opened with the now-classic “Gangnam Style” (as the record-holder of most YouTube views, he later won Viral Video Of The Year—no surprises there). The night was heavy on Canadian talent: singer Avril Lavigne, who arrived wearing a crown of spikes like a gothic Statue of Liberty, performed “Here’s To Never Growing Up” (in spite of her very grown-up impending vows), followed by Marianas Trench, performing the song that won them MMVA Pop Video of the Year, “Desperate Measures.” Serena Ryder won her first MMVA for her first nomination (Rock/Alternative Video of the Year),  and celebrated in a literal blaze of glory—with fireworks, as she performed her singles “Stompa,” and “What I Wouldn’t Do.”

Taylor Swift accepted the award for “Your Fave” international artist or group, beating out fellow guests Demi Lovato and Psy. The local “Your Fave” award went to Justin Bieber. Drake made a surprise appearance to accept his award for Best Hiphop Video for “Started From The Bottom,” and then he thanked Toronto, from the bottom of his heart.

The 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards will air again Thursday, June 29.
