Natalie Portman turns to vegetarian diet while pregnant

By Alexandra Heilbron on April 11, 2011 | 24 Comments

Natalie Portman, 29, revealed during a radio interview today that she’s gone back to being a vegetarian while she’s pregnant. Although she had been a vegetarian for over 20 years, two years ago Natalie became a vegan after reading Jonathan Safran Foer’s revealing book Eating Animals. However, she told Q100′s Bert Show in Atlanta: “I actually went back to being vegetarian when I became pregnant, just because I felt like I wanted that stuff. I was listening to my body to have eggs and dairy and that sort of stuff. I know there are people who do stay vegan but I think you have to just be careful, watch your iron levels and your B12 levels and supplement those if there are things you might be low in in your diet.” In 2009, Natalie wrote: “I’m often interrogated about being vegetarian. I’ve always been shy about being critical of others’ choices because I hate when people do that to me.” Natalie launched her own line of upscale vegan footwear in 2007 with New York shoe store Te Casan, made from animal-free materials. Vegan and PETA supporter Alicia Silverstone also recently announced she’s pregnant, but so far she has not made any changes in her diet.

Good for both her and Alicia. They will have very healthy children.

Not gonna happen here. I am at the top of the food chain for a reason…now someone pass me a rare steak please.

That’s exactly what you’ll be after all that fat and carcinogens – lifeless.

no need to be so rude about peoples choices to eat meat c9. if you ask me people that are vegetarian or vegan are unhealthy, you NEED the nutrients and vitamins that come from meats and fish so i actually dont think their children will be that healthy. also i have read some stupid stuff these people feed their children when they are born (instead of formula or breast milk some feed them some vegan crap that actually makes them sick instead of healthy) because they think its “better” for them.

wow, mandee, your ignorance is scary.

  6. hmmm • April 11, 2011 @ 7:43 PM

I agree with mandee. I find it very sad when people argue that being vegan somehow makes you better than other people. It doesn’t and well honestly there are proteins in meat and eggs that you cannot get from other sources, which are important for embryo development (given that we proteins are building blocks and its simpler biologically to get it from other meat than it is to synthesize from nuts or soy)- just science people.

Either way, people should stop criticizing one another. being vegan or vegetarian is a choice and eating meat is a choice. But I think that a baby should be developed with all the necessary building blocks it needs to be healthy, and then that baby should make a choice later in life whether it wants to eat meat, or just veggies.

Phil Doucette on April 11, 2011 7:29 PM i am clearly more educated than vegetarians or vegans are, i still eat meat sometimes and therefore get the nutrients that i need in order to live a healthy, productive life.

  8. C9tg5e • April 12, 2011 @ 9:14 AM

Clearly you’re not, mandee. Vegans and vegetarians are the healthiest people there are. When was the last time you had a cold? All the vegetarians I know haven’t had colds for years and years – it’s extremely rare for them to get sick. A vegetarian diet gives humans all the nutrients they need. Meat eaters actually get too much protein, which puts them at higher risk for all kinds of things, including osteoporosis. I’ll bet you’ve never read one article or book on vegetarianism.

You can easily get all the nutrients out of a strict vegetarian diet. There are enough veggies and grains which offer all of the needed nutrients and vitamins to effectively replace the need to eat meats, meat by-products & fish. So long as those which chose to lead that lifestyle pay very close attention to the meals they eat.

@C9tg5e I might have been able to respond to your comment but as it stands now it is not coherent.

But as I said earlier there is no way I could ever live that sort of lifestyle. I’m still waiting on the rare steak…

You can get a lot of protein from other sources, like quinoa for example. But I think eating habits are a personal choice, and if she thinks that this is best for her baby, then ok.

  11. L1feless • April 12, 2011 @ 1:20 PM

I agree Red. The important thing is that she be very mindful of the diet in which she consumes. If she misses out in easting certain vitamins and essential nutrients then the effects could have the reverse effect she is intending. Organic supplements might also be a good alternative in this scenario. Again careful use and research is key as many supplementer require other foods or nutrients to be taken with them if they are to be effective.

Good luck doing regular physical activitys like heavy gym workouts and anything else thats physically demanding. I dont eat many types of meats but if i didnt have chicken or beef i dont know what id do. One can argue that a Vegan can get all their protiens from peanuts, whole wheat pasta and so on but really they are not as good as the real deal and most veggie meals are bland in taste except for portabello burgers lol

  13. Germain • April 12, 2011 @ 3:08 PM

I admire people that have the self discipline to follow those diets or lifestyles, god knows I don’t have it.

    We are what we eat.

  14. mandee • April 12, 2011 @ 4:45 PM

C9tg5e on April 12, 2011 9:14 AM its extremely rare for me to get sick either, when i do its once every few years and it usually isnt that bad of a sickness. and youre right, im not interested in vegetarians or their practices so i have no urge to read about them when i can help it.

    L1feless on April 12, 2011 10:25 AM i like you. 😀

  15. Kags • April 13, 2011 @ 12:01 AM

she looks amazing! I hope she has a healthy baby

  16. mandee • April 13, 2011 @ 5:46 AM

oh, i hope she has a healthy baby as well!

  17. Jason • April 13, 2011 @ 9:10 AM

I don’t think anybody here knows what healthy is.
I not only eat mine, but everybody elses steak grissle around me. I hate seeing steak fat go to waste. Its the best part. I like slicing a big chunk of cheese off the brick and melting it in the microwave and I love pouring on the syrup on top of my bacon mixed pancakes. I’m athletic and on top of the world. My Great Grandfather ate nothing but grease and lived to 99!
PS: I do not socialize with vegans or vegatarians cause thats as bad as being a queer from Glee.

    LMAO Jason!

C9tg5e: “Vegans and vegetarians are the healthiest people there are” “it’s extremely rare for them to get sick”…….hahaha, what a load of BS! You don’t have the credentials to be spouting such crap, lol. Oh..and reading all the articles and books in the world on vegetarianism still won’t give you those credentials 😛

  19. C9tg5e • April 13, 2011 @ 1:35 PM

Nancy, welcome back! I’ve missed your spicy comments. However, I respectfully don’t understand how you think that reading the research surrounding vegetarianism gives me less credence than you, when you obviously haven’t read or studied anything about it (or you wouldn’t make such ill informed statements). My personal experience is I have not had a cold or any other illness in well over 15 years. I’ve been a vegetarian for almost 20 years. As well, all of (that’s 100%) of my friends and family who are vegetarians have not had a cold etc., since they became vegetarians. How many times in the last 20 years have you and your friends had a common cold? But thank you for your “expert” and well-researched opinion. 🙂

  20. Andrea • April 13, 2011 @ 8:50 PM

I totally agree with Germain. If people have the will and commitment to stick to a certain way of eating because they believe it’s healthier and/or they love animals or for whatever reason, good for them. I don’t know why everyone always wants to criticize or belittle vegetarians/vegans. They believe they’re doing a good thing (and actually, I’ve read three books in the past couple of months about how to make healthier food choices these days in order to live a longer life and avoid strokes/heart attacks and all three said to cut down on meat if you can’t cut it out altogether), what’s the harm in that?

  21. Jason • April 14, 2011 @ 9:05 AM

I agree with that Jason guy! I love steak fat!

  22. Nancy • April 16, 2011 @ 6:29 PM

C9tg5e…glad to be back, and put you in your place! 🙂

Btw…I never said you have “less credence” than me..did I? I just said that what you said is a load of BS..and it is cuz you CANNOT PROVE in a million years that ‘Vegans and vegetarians are THE healthiest people there are’. Not in a million years. Maybe they are healthy..I never said they weren’t/aren’t..but to say they are THE healthiest? Load of sh!t!! Just sayin’!!

    Jason… 😀

Healthiest thing she can do for her baby is to be a vegetarian.
