The King of Apes smashes his way into theaters today in Kong: Skull Island, promising giant-sized fun. Read on to see what other movies are coming to theaters this weekend! ~Ashleen Grange

Kong: Skull Island – In the 1970s, a diverse team (including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and Samuel L. Jackson) is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted but beautiful island that goes by the name of Skull Island, in the Indian Ocean. They soon discover that it’s home to a wonder of colossal proportions — the gigantic and prehistoric ape known as King Kong, who possesses great strength and semi-human intelligence. As the team ventures deeper into the primate’s territory, it becomes clear that they have more to fear than Kong, as there may be more terrifying, blood-thirsty predators lurking inhabiting the island. The Last Word – A high-handed, retired businesswoman named Harriet (Shirley MacLaine) decides to get someone to write her obituary before she dies, to make sure her life story is told on her own terms. A young journalist named Anne Sherman (Amanda Seyfried) is tasked with writing Harriet’s obituary. When Anne is given a list of people to gather quotes from about Harriet, it becomes clear that she’s not well-liked by her peers. In spite of Harriet’s domineering attitude, the two eventually establish a friendship of sorts. In select theaters today.

Window Horses – This unique animated feature follows Rosie (Sandra Oh), a young Canadian poet of mixed race who lives with her overprotective Chinese grandparents in Vancouver, but dreams of a more glamorous and artistic life abroad. Having just published a book of poetry, she receives an invitation to a poetry festival in Iran. Rosie decides to embark on her own for the first time in her life, to the dismay of her grandparents. While in Iran, immersed in a vast array of culture, she meets fellow artists from around the world who open her eyes to the nature of art, ultimately changing her life. Bitter Harvest – Two lovers, artist Yuri (Max Irons) and his childhood sweetheart Natalka (Samantha Barks), are struggling to survive while caught in cruel dictator Joseph Stalin’s brutal and deliberate starvation of the Ukrainian people from 1932 to 1933, known as the Holodomor. After escaping from a Soviet prison, Yuri joins the anti-Bolshevik resistance movement. He must overcome Stalin’s push to build a strong Soviet Union, while attempting to fight for the liberation of Ukraine, and also to reunite with Natalka. Opening wide today. Click for showtimes.
