New movies in theaters – Money Monster and more

If you’re looking for another weekend filled with big-budget superhero blockbusters (à la Captain America: Civil War) then check yourself before you wreck yourself, because we’ve got none of that here.

But what we do have is one sleek financial thriller starring megastars George Clooney and Julia Roberts (Money Monster) and seven distinct and thought-provoking independent films (e.g. A Bigger Splash, Dheepan, Tale of Tales, How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town, etc.) to whet your movie-loving appetite. ~Shelby Morton

In this high-stakes hostage thriller, TV personality Lee Gates (George Clooney) gives insider tips on air, aimed at everyday people, which has earned him a title as the money guru of Wall Street. A young man named Kyle (Jack O’Connell) watches the show and places all of his family’s money on a tip from Gates. When the tip proves to be bad and the money is all lost, Kyle goes to the station and takes Lee and his entire show hostage on air. He threatens to kill Lee unless he gets the stock up 24 and a half points before the bell. The show’s ratings soar as the entire country tunes in to watch the hostage situation unfold. At the same time, the crazy happenings put a light on a possible scandal. Money Monster, also starring Julia Roberts, hits theaters across Canada today. Click here for showtimes.

When undercover cop Chan (Wu Jing) gets too close to revealing the mastermind of a drug syndicate, his cover is blown in the action sequel Kill Zone 2, releasing in Toronto, Vancouver and on VOD. Double-crossed and under a false identity, he’s thrown into a Thai prison, where a guard discovers the inmate is a bone marrow match for his dying daughter. The two must find a way to help Chan escape while battling a deadly clandestine mob operation going on within the prison walls. Click here for showtimes.

In this fairy tale anthology, director Matteo Garrone weaves together 17th-century Neapolitan folk stories that spur both laughter and fear. The Enchanted Doe, The Flea and The Flayed Old Lady make up this film that features performances by Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Toby Jones and Vincent Cassel. Invoking hints of Tim Burton, Tale of Tales, opens today in Saskatoon and Montreal. It competed at Cannes in 2015 and is geared towards adults who long for a dark twist on fairy tale storytelling. Click here for showtimes.

Filmmaker Paul De Smedt (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton), a rock star who has just undergone throat surgery, are enjoying a relaxing vacation on a remote Italian island in the quirky crime drama A Bigger Splash, out in Toronto today and select cities later in May. The tranquility comes to an end when Marianne’s old flame, music producer Harry Hawkes (Ralph Fiennes), and seductive younger woman Penelope (Dakota Johnson), who may or may not be Harry’s daughter, arrive on the island and barge into the middle of the couple’s vacation. Click here for showtimes.

Based on Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s classic novel, Sunset Song focuses on the life of the Guthrie family in northeast Scotland in the early 1900s. The family is led by a patriarch (Peter Mullan) who is prone to anger and has caused his fearful wife to retreat into silence. Chris, their beautiful and intelligent daughter, and her brother Will dream of freedom and escape from their situation and the village in which they live. Freedom comes suddenly and Chris eventually finds happiness in the form of newcomer Ewan Tavendale. Unfortunately, Chris’ newfound happiness is not to be. Despite their change in fortune, the lives of Chris, Will, Ewan and everyone else are ultimately disrupted by the beginning of WWI. The Trust, opening today in Calgary and Montreal, follows two police officers, Lieutenant Jim Stone (Nicolas Cage) and Sergeant David Waters (Elijah Wood), who are increasingly bored and disillusioned with their jobs. They’re also finding it more and more difficult to make ends meet on a cop’s wage. While going through case files, they discover a drug dealer who has access to large amounts of money. Jim and David then decide to team up to find and break into the dealer’s cash-filled vault. Click here for showtimes.

Debuting in Toronto and Vancouver today, Dheepan is set at the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, where Dheepan, a Tamil soldier, is seeking a way out. His family and comrades have been killed and he wants to start a new life. He meets Yalini in a refugee camp. Together they create a fake family with young Illayaal, fool the aid workers and get to France. Once in Paris, they must use their ingenuity to survive and make their fake family real. Dheepan manages to find a job as a caretaker in a run-down, crime-ridden building but past violence and new dangers combine to threaten their lives. Click here for showtimes.

In the tight-knit community of Beaver’s Ridge, the town places so much importance on family values that they’re known for their wholesome ways. Years earlier, Cassie Cranston (Jewel Staite) was known as the town slut and was shunned by the community for an embarrassing encounter at a party. She ran away to the big city to become a sex columnist, labeling the town prudish in her columns.
